In it, Maynard Smith summarises work on evolutionary game theory that had developed in the 1970s, to which he made several important contributions. The book is also noted for being well written and not overly mathematically challenging. The main contribution to be had from this book is the introduction of the Evolutionarily Stable Strategy , or ESS, concept, which states that for a set of behaviours to be conserved over evolutionary time, they must be the most profitable avenue of action when common, so that no alternative behaviour can invade. So, for instance, suppose that in a population of frogs, males fight to the death over breeding ponds. This would be an ESS if any one cowardly frog that does not fight to the death always fares worse in fitness terms, of course . A more likely scenario is one where fighting to the death is not an ESS because a frog might arise that will stop fighting if it realises that it is going to lose. This frog would then reap the benefits of fighting, but not the ultimate cost. Hence, fighting to the death would easily be invaded by a mutation that causes this sort of informed fighting. Much complexity can be built from this, and Maynard Smith is outstanding at explaining in clear prose and with simple math ... evolution Category Game theory Category Evolutionary game theory Category Mathematics books Evolution ... game Honesty, bargaining and commitment The evolution of cooperation Postscript Appendices. Emergent evolution is the hypothesis that, in the course of evolution , some entirely new properties, such as life and consciousness , appear at certain critical points, usually because of an unpredictable rearrangement of the already existing entities. The concept has influenced the development of systems theory and Complex systems complexity theory . Historical context The word emergence emergent was first used to describe the concept by George Lewes in volume two of his 1875 book Problems of Life and Mind p.  412 . Henri Bergson covered similar themes in the popular book Creative Evolution book Creative Evolution in 1907. It was further developed by Samuel Alexander in his Gifford Lectures at University of Glasgow Glasgow during 1916 18 and published as Space, Time, and Deity 1920 . The term emergent evolution was coined by C. Lloyd Morgan in his own Gifford lectures of 1921 22 at University of St. Andrews St. Andrews and published as Emergent Evolution 1923 . In an appendix to one lecture in his book, Morgan acknowledged the contributions of Roy Wood Sellars Evolutionary Naturalism 1922 . The evolution of dominance concerns the evolution of genetic dominance . The central argument, that modifier gene s act upon other genes to make them dominant or recessive, and that these are then themselves subject to natural selection was first proposed by the British population geneticist Ronald Fisher in 1928 ref Fisher, R.A. 1928. http digital.library.adelaide.edu.au coll special fisher 68.pdf The possible modification of the response of the wild type to recurrent mutations . Am. Nat., 62 115 126. ref , and expanded upon in his book The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection ref Fisher, R.A. 1930. The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection , Clarendon Press, Oxford ref . However, Sewall Wright and J.B.S. Haldane believed that the main explanation for dominance should be based on physiological factors, and that selection for modifiers was not a primary force. This led to a major fallout between Fisher and Wright. Subsequent works, particularly in molecular biology and biochemistry , have tended to favour Wright s view without completely excluding that the Fisherian argument may, in some circumstances, apply. Unreferenced date September 2007 Multilineal evolution is a 20th century social theory about the evolution of societies and culture s. It is composed of many competing theories by various sociologists and anthropologists. This theory has replaced the older 19th century set of theories of unilineal evolution . When critique of classical social evolutionism became widely accepted, modern anthropological and sociological approaches have changed to reflect their responses to the critique of their predecessor. Modern theories are careful to avoid unsourced, ethnocentric speculation, comparisons, or value judgements more or less regarding individual societies as existing within their own historical contexts. These conditions provided the context for new theories such as cultural relativism and multilineal evolution. By the 1940s cultural anthropologists such as Leslie White and Julian Steward sought to revive an evolutionary model on a more scientific basis, and succeeded in establishing an approach known as the neoevolutionism . White rejected the opposition between primitive and modern societies but did argue that societies could be distinguished based on the amount of energy they harnessed, and that increased energy allowed for greater social differentiation. Quantum evolution is a component of George Gaylord Simpson George Gaylord Simpson s multi tempoed theory of evolutionary change, proposed to explain the rapid emergence of higher Scientific classification taxonomic groups . According to Simpson, evolutionary rates differ from group to group and even among closely related lineages. These different rates of evolutionary change were designated by Simpson as horotelic medium tempo , bradytelic slow tempo , and tachytelic rapid tempo .
