Arthur Alexander Thomson, Order of the British Empire MBE 7 April 1894 at Harrogate , Yorkshire 2 June 1968 near Lord s in London was an England English writer best known for his books on cricket , for which he used the byline AA Thomson . He wrote nearly 60 books in all, including plays, novels, verse, humour and travel books. Before turning his hand to cricket writing, he was a drama critic, and a columnist for the Radio Times and for a Sunday newspaper, as well as having been a civil servant . ref Cricketers of My Times , Stanley Paul, 1967, p11. ref As a cricket writer, he generally concentrated on bringing out the character of the players that he was writing about, and he made liberal use of humour. In these characteristics, and in that his cricket memories went back as far as the first decade of the 20th century, he might be compared with Neville Cardus , though Thomson was writing from a Yorkshire rather than a Lancashire perspective. He once said that cricket had given him more unalloyed pleasure over a longer period than anything else, and that pleasure was evident in his writing. Thomson saw cricket not only as the most pleasurable of pastimes but also quite like the Poet Laureate might see it an eternally vibrant display of colour, spirit, humour and conflict. Tim Rice , in his introduction to the 1991 reissue of Pavilioned in Splendour , quoted John Arlott as having written Mr Thomson writes with a nostalgia, a wealth of anecdote, a warmth and heroic strain which, if we were not careful, would make Yorkshiremen of us all. His autobiographical novel The Exquisite Burden 1935, reissued 1963 , which his anonymous Wisden Cricketer s Almanack Wisden obituarist described as brilliant , was based on his Yorkshire childhood. In 1966 he was awarded the MBE for services to sports writing. ref Ibid, inside back flap of book s jacket. ref Bibliography Cricket Cricket My ... http content uk.cricinfo.com wisdenalmanack content story 228446.html Wisden obituary DEFAULTSORT Thomson ... more details

Thomson Local is a local business telephone directory published in the United Kingdom by Thomson Directories Ltd., from its head office in Thomson House, Farnborough, Hampshire . It is the principal rival and for the 1980s and some of the 1990s the sole rival to the Yellow Pages published by Thomson as the Thomson Yellow Pages until it was sold off to the privatised BT Group BT . Thomson Local is a focused local area directory which has continually innovated with features such as colour and knock out white advertisements. It was the first such directory in the UK to contain added value features such as local maps, local guides, and additional useful information beyond the actual business listings themselves. Thomson Directories Ltd was originally formed to publish the Thomson Local in 1980 by The ThomsonCorporation after it had sold off its Thomson Yellow Pages business and Dun & Bradstreet , in partnership. After trials in several areas, the Thomson Local was first published throughout Great Britain in 1981. After a series of sales and buyouts over subsequent years, as of 2005 Thomson Directories Ltd is owned by Seat Pagine Gialle S.p.A. of Italy . The directory is still distributed without charge to households in printed form. In the 1990s the company expanded its operations to include its own online directory in the shape of ThomsonLocal.com and a range of partner implementions supplying classified and keyword based listings to companies such as MSN, StreetMap, Pipex and many others and many others. In July 2010 Thomson Local signed a multi year agreement to become the UK s first reseller of adCenter, the Pay Per Click Platform for Microsoft s search engine Bing. ref Media Week, Microsoft nets deal for Thomson Local to sell Bing ads ref .
