nihongo Japan s ThreepennyOpera Nihon Sanmon Opera is a novel by Takeshi Kaiko in 1959. The name was derived from Bertold Brecht s ThreepennyOpera and in a way is its variant, in the Japan ese setting. The novel is based on actual events. It is set in post World War II Japan. In the middle of Osaka there are ruins of the Imperial Arsenal demolished by American bombing, full of scrap metal . While the metals are precious in the destroyed economy of Japan, state bureaucracy is extremely slow to recover them. A settlement of outcasts, lumpen proletariat , spontaneously organize themselves into brigades, using this circumstance as an opportunity to sneak into the Arsenal and scavenge the scrap. Reporters dubbed them Apaches , after the Native Americans in the United States Native American Apache tribe , and they accepted the name. The novel seemingly has no positive heroes, it is intentionally anti aesthetical, but the reader feels sympathy for these people strugging for life in the miniature copy of the capitalist society with all its attributes division of labour , exploitation , hard toil and the dream to get rich quick. After this novel the term apache entered the Japanese language to denote scavengers of Recycling recyclables , e.g., of scrap paper . ref http www.boston.com news world articles 2004 11 21 companies scavengers scrap over recycled paper in japan Companies, scavengers scrap over recycled paper in Japan a November 21, 2004 Los Angeles Times article ref References references Category 1959 novels Category Japanese novels Category Novels set in Japan fr L Op ra des gueux roman ... more details

Opera semiseria semi serious opera is an Italy Italian genre of opera , popular in the early and middle 19th century. Related to the opera buffa , opera semiseria contains elements of comedy but also of pathos, sometimes with a pastoral setting. It can usually be distinguished from tragic operas or melodramas by the presence of a basso buffo . One of the better known examples is Gaetano Donizetti s Linda di Chamounix . Another example is Gioacchino Rossini s La gazza ladra . Vincenzo Bellini s La sonnambula has all the characteristics of the genre except the presence of the required basso buffo and is regarded as both opera seria and opera semiseria ref cite book last Sadie ed first Stanley title The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians Vl 2 year revised 1980 publisher Macmillan location London isbn 1 56159 174 2 pages 453 ref .
