  1. Chamber tomb

Unreferenced date February 2009 A chamber tomb is a tomb for burial used in many different culture s. In the case of individual burials, the chamber is thought to signify a higher status for the interree than a simple grave burial grave . Built from Rock geology rock or sometimes wood , the chambers could also serve as places for storage of the dead from one family or social group and were often used over long periods for multiple burials. There are numerous terms for them depending on the period, design and region in question. Most were constructed from large stones or megalith s and covered by cairn s, tumulus barrow s or earth, but the term is also applied to tombs cut directly into rock and wooden chambered tombs covered with earth barrows. 1. Tomb of the Eagles

Image Tomb of the Eagles.jpg thumb Inside the tomb Located on at cliff edge at Isbister on South Ronaldsay in Orkney , Scotland, the Tomb of the Eagles is a Neolithic chambered tomb . First explored by Ronald Simison in 1958, he conducted his own excavations at the site in 1976. Alerted by Simison, archaeologist John Hedges then mounted a full study, prepared a technical report and wrote a popular book ref Hedges, J. 1990. Tomb of the Eagles Death and Life in a Stone Age Tribe. New Amsterdam Books. ISBN 0 941533 05 0 ref that cemented the tomb s name. ref name pitts Pitts, M. 2006. Flight of the eagles. British Archaeology 86 6 ref 16,000 human bones were found at the site, as well as 725 from birds. These were identified as predominantly belonging to the white tailed sea eagle Haliaeetus albicilla and represented between 8 and 20 individuals. These were originally interpreted as a foundation deposit , however this interpretation has been challenged by new dating techniques. These reveal that the eagles died c. 2450 2050 BC, up to 1,000 years after the building of the tomb. This confirms growing evidence from other sites that the neolithic tombs of Orkney remained in use for many generations. ref name pitts See also Timeline of prehistoric Scotland Oldest buildings in the United Kingdom References references External links http www.tomboftheeagles.co.uk Tomb of the Eagles Official Webpage http www.orkneyjar.com history isbister index.html Tomb of the Eagles Orkneyjar.com Prehistoric Orkney Category Stone Age sites in Scotland Category Prehistoric Orkney Category Archaeological sites in Orkney Category Scheduled Ancient Monuments in Scotland Category Neolithic Scotland coord 58.740 N 2.922 W type landmark region GB ORK display title Scotland hist stub UK archaeology stub Orkney geo stub cy Bedd yr Eryrod de Isbister Cairn nl Isbister Chambered Cairn ru ...   more details
