A watchtower is a type of fortification used in many parts of the world. It differs from a regular tower in that its primary use is military, and from a turret in that it is usually a freestanding structure. Its main purpose is to provide a high, safe place from which a sentinel or guard may observe the surrounding area. In some cases, non military towers, such as religious pagodas , may also be used as watchtowers. An example of nonmilitary watchtower in history is the one of Jerusalem. Though the Hebrews used it to keep a watch for approaching armies, the religious authorities forbade the taking of weapons up into the tower as this would require bringing weapons through the temple. Rebuilt by King Herod, that watchtower was renamed after Mark Antony , his friend who battled against Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus later Augustus and lost. File homburgswarte.jpg thumb The Homburg Watchtower The Homburg Watchtower lang de Homburgswarte is an observation tower on the site of a Germanic refuge castle Fliehburg near the Hexentanzplatz Harz Hexentanzplatz above the town of Thale in the Harz Mountains of central Germany. Location The Sachsenwall Way Sachsenwallweg runs through open oak woods to the Homburg Watchtower about 250 m northeast of the Thale Mountain Theatre Harz Mountain Theatre on the Hexentanzplatz . It is sited on the terrain of an old castle, the Homburg. History The Homburg like the Winzenburg on the Rosstrappe on the other side of the gorge acted as a refuge castle for Germanic tribes. It was built between 750 and 450 B. C. and was protected by the rampart system and the Sachsenwall ref The Sachsenwall referred to here is not the Limes Saxoniae , but the remains of a more than 1500 year old granite wall on the Hexentanzplatz ref in the immediate vicinity. In the southern part of the rampart system is a gap with a ditch in front of it behind the eastern rampart is a walkway like inner ditch. It appears that clandestine Germanic customs and rituals may have been practised here in the period following Christianisation , as indicated, for example, by the discovery of a sacrifice stone with a swastika in 1901. In 1901 the Harz Club built an observation tower on the site of the Homburg, that increasingly fell into rack and ruin after the Second World War . The tower was rebuilt in 1993 and may be ascended. Views The view to the south and east is restricted due to the low height of the tower. Towards the west, however, the vista opens up over the Bode Gorge as far as the Brocken . Ton the north the towns of Blankenburg Harz Blankenburg , Halberstadt and Quedlinburg may be made out. The town of Thale spreads out immediately below the tower. A Watchtower is a spirit guardian of one of the four cardinal point s in both ceremonial magic and the neopagan religion of Wicca . Alternately, the Watchtowers are the abodes of the guardians. Often believed to represent the Classical element four elements , the Watchtowers are invoked during ritual to cast the magic circle . They may be pictured in the imagination or represented with tablets or other physical symbols. In many Wicca and Witchcraft systems the Watchtowers are evocational symbols of spiritual beings known as the Watchers. Each Watchtower is associated with one of the four quarters of north, east, south and west. In some traditions the Watchtowers are associated with the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. They are also each linked to a specific star. The north Watchtower is Fomalhaut , the east is Aldebaran , Regulus marks the south, and Antares is the west. Archangel s are also used the North Earth Watchtower is Uriel , the East Air Watchtower is Raphael archangel Raphael , the South Fire Watchtower is Michael archangel Michael , and the West Water Watchtower is Gabriel . In Roman religion In archaic Roman religion, small towers were built at the crossroads, and an altar was set before them upon which offerings were given to nature spirits.
