The novel was adapted for the movie YoungMan with a Horn film YoungMan With a Horn 1950 with Kirk Douglas , Lauren Bacall , and Doris Day . Plot introduction A jazz fiction novel set in a world of speakeasies , big band s, and the Harlem Renaissance . It is loosely based on the life of the great cornet player Bix Beiderbecke who died of alcoholism in 1931 at the age of 28. It tells the story of Rick Martin, a tormented genius from childhood until his death at age 30. The story also dwells on the white black abilities to play jazz. However, Rick establishes a strong relationship to black musicians who in fact teach him a great deal. The book details both the widely accepted public view of the jazz musician of the time as well as a musician s own struggle for perfection. This drive finally destroys Rick. It is housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna , Austria . The work is generally ascribed to Lotto s stay in Treviso . In was acquired by the Viennese museum in 1816. Description The picture portrays the bust a youngman from three quarter, looking at the seer. It shows an extreme attention to details, such as the slight epidermic imperfections, the elongated nose, the soft hair. The use of light and the composition are similar to other early work by Lott, such as the Portrait of Bishop Bernardo de Rossi 1505 . The face is framed by the dark clothes and hat, painted over a white brocade drapery with a green border. On the right, an opening to a darker background shows a lightened lamp, a symbol which could allude to the man s personality or deeds, and which has been variously interpreted from a reference to an evangelic episode to an allegory of the human life s shortness, due the dimness of the flame . The subject has been identified as Broccardo Malchiostro, the young chancellor of the bishop of Treviso , Bernardo de Rossi , who both risked their lives in a plot in 1503. The decoration of the drapery would thus be a charades it is a brocade with carduus , whence Brocade carduus Brocardus . Such allusions are contained in several Lotto works, such as the Portrait of Lucina Brembati , painted during his maturity. Live versions have been released as the second track of KOH EPT , the 11th track of the first disc of 2000 Years The Millennium Concert , and the opening track on the first disc of 12 Gardens Live . It is also included in the Broadway show Movin Out musical Movin Out . The instrumental Prelude lasts roughly a minute and forty five seconds, starting with a rapid fire piano riff on the middle C piano key, joined by various instruments, swinging through styles such an Aaron Copland styled ballad to funk to a Southwestern beat. It is then followed by Angry YoungMan , which paints a slightly sardonic picture of youthful, militant rebellion that is unflagging, trying to fight life s ills despite constant failure He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl And he s always at home with his back to the wall And he s proud of his scars and the battles he s lost And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on his cross And he likes to be known as the angry youngman The song contrasts the angry youth with the protagonist s mature, world weary outlook, which could possibly be seen as either be the same angry youngman when he is older or somebody who was once felt as the angry youngman currently does I believe I ve passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage I found that just surviving was a noble fight I once believed in causes too I had my pointless point of view And life went on no matter who was wrong or right .
