  1. Pastoral theology

Pastoral theology is the branch of practical theology concerned with the application of the study of religion in the context of regular church ministry. This approach to theology seeks to give practical expression to theology. Normally viewed as an equipping of ministers, practical theology is often considered to be more pragmatic than speculative, indeed, essentially a practical science. Hence its main interests are in those areas of theology which will aid the clergyman in ministry. Topics tend to include homiletics , pastoral care , sacrament sacramental theology , and ethics . All branches of theology, whether theoretical or practical, purpose in one way or another to make priests, pastors, and others in a pastoral role the ministers of Christ, and the dispensers of the mysteries of God 1 Corinthians 4 1 . Pastoral theology presupposes other various branches, accepts the apologetic, dogmatic, exegetic, moral, juridical, ascetical, liturgical, and other conclusions reached by the ecclesiastical student, and scientifically applies these various conclusions to the priestly ministry. History During the Middle Ages, there was not yet a separated and systematized science of pastoral theology. Scholasticism did not recognize this science apart from other branches of theology. Dogma and moral were so taught as to include the application of their conclusions to the care of souls. Still, even then writings of the great Doctors of the Church were at times purely pastoral such were the Pastoral Care of St. Gregory the Great Opuscula , 17 20, of St. Thomas Aquinas St. Bonaventure s De sex alis seraphim , De regimine anim , Confessionale the Summa theologica Books II, III , together ... theology have often entered into the domain of pastoral theology. 1. African Theology

African Theology refers to a particular school of African theologians who have attempted to articulate Christian theology from the perspective of the African cultural context. Although there are very old Christian traditions on the continent, in the last centuries Christianity in Africa has been determined to a large extent by western forms of Christianity, brought by colonization and Mission Christian mission . This also means that the theology in Africa was strongly influenced by Western theology. This changed mid 20th century when African Theology as a theological discipline came into being. This movement began to protest against negative colonial and missionary interpretations of the religion and culture in Africa. Realizing that theology is a contextual phenomenon, African Christians begun to read the Scriptures using their own cultural lens, which of course resulted in some interpretations that did not always agree with how Western theology interpreted things. As such, African Theology stands on the shoulders of the early African Independent Churches that broke away from missionary churches in the late 19th century or early 20th century. African theology is engaged to shape Christianity in an African way by adapting and using African concepts and ideas. Representatives are scholars such as Idowu and Mbiti, who gave an analysis and interpretation of the African traditional religion and point to its relation to the Christian faith. Others like Bediako and Pobee have developed ... the relation of African Theology to Black Theology . During the 1970s Black Theology developed in South Africa , where the main concern was liberation from apartheid , while African Theology developed in other parts of the continent. 1. Modality (theology)

refimprove date April 2008 Modality in Protestantism Protestant and Roman Catholic Church Catholic Christian theology , is the structure and organization of the local church loca l or Catholic Church universal church . In Catholic theology, the modality is the universal Catholic church. In Protestant theology, the modality is variously described as either the universal church that is, all believers or the local church. By contrast, parachurch organization s are sodality sodalities . These include missionary organizations and Christian charities not linked to specific churches. Some theologians consider denominations, schools of theology, and other multi congregational sodalities. Catholic sodalities include orders, monasteries and convents. The modality versus sodality parachurch dispute In some Christian circles, particularly among non denominational evangelicals, there is conflict over whether parachurch organizations are a biblical model for ministry. A minority of pastors and theologians assert that only the modality is a valid model for ministry, and they typically equate modality with the local church structure. Central to the dispute is whether the missionary travels of Paul the Apostle should be categorized as an expression of modality or sodality. A practical consideration in the modality sodality dispute is that certain Christian efforts, like translating the Bible into different languages, are difficult to organize and fund solely by local congregations in the absence of parachurch organizations. Ralph D. Winter of the U.S. Center for World Mission US Center for World Mission has argued that modes of modality and sodality are both necessary and will be most effective if they are supportive of one another. ref Ralph Winter, http resources.campusforchrist.org images 4 48 The Parachruch.pdf The Two Structures of God s Redemptive Mission pdf ref References references Category Christian group structuring Category Christian theology christian theology stub ...   more details
