    Unreferenced date March 2009 The third person limited often called third person intimate by those educated in non American British based systems is a narrative mode in which the reader experiences the story through the senses and thoughts of one, or more, participating characters. This is almost always the main character e.g., Gabriel in James Joyce s The Dead short story The Dead , the titular character in Nathaniel Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown , the elderly fisherman in Ernest Hemingway s The Old Man and the Sea , or Harry Potter character Harry Potter in J. K. Rowling s Harry Potter series . In third person limited, the narration is limited in the same way a first person narrative might be i.e., the narrator cannot tell the reader things that the focal character does not know but the text is written in the third person. The third person limited mode grew dramatically in popularity during the twentieth century, such that it can be associated with the twentieth century much as the third person omniscient is associated with the nineteenth century.     The third person omniscient is a narrative mode in which a story is presented by a narrator with an overarching point of view, seeing and knowing everything that happens within the world of the story, including what each of the characters is thinking and feeling. ref Harvnb Herman Jahn Ryan 2005 p 442 ref It is the most common narrative mode found in sprawling, epic stories such as George Eliot s Middlemarch . The godlike all knowing perspective of the third person omniscient allows the narrator to tell the reader things that none of the characters know, or indeed things that no human being could ever know e.g., what the first conscious creature felt like as it climbed out of the primordial ooze, in Douglas Adams Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy . Hence the third person omniscient is most often associated with sweeping, epic stories, in contrast to third person limited narratives, which do not stray beyond the characters knowledge and experiences, and are most often associated with more intimate stories. Nevertheless, Jane Austen s novels are third person omniscient, sometimes giving us information that the character of focus as opposed to the point of view character could not be aware of, but Austen s novels typically focus on a small number of characters.     The third person effect hypothesis states that a person exposed to a persuasive communication in the mass media sees it as having a greater effect on others than on himself or herself Davison, 1983 . This is known as the perceptual hypothesis, but there is also a behavioral hypothesis predicting that perceiving others as more vulnerable increases support for restrictions on mass media. The third person effect hypothesis also argues that people are compelled themselves to take action after being exposed to a persuasive message but this action might not be due to the message itself but to the anticipation of the reaction of others. This action is unpredictable and it might be either in conformity with the message or counter to it. Usually, the effects considered are about general media influence, but valence of the message also affects the effect size. Messages with undesirable consequences of persuasion increase the effect size and messages with desirable consequences decrease or even reverse the effect, as in someone believing that they are more able than others to follow a promoted healthy diet.
