Thomas Blinston, of Wigan . He was born on 13 February 1747, and he lost his father when he was in his third year. He received his elementary education at Warrington grammar school, and later in the Warrington Academy . He was subsequently licensed as a preacher of the gospel, and became minister of the congregation at Cockey Moor Ainsworth, near Bolton in 1768. He remained there for eleven years. When he left, the numbers in attendance had trebled. In 1780 he became the minister of Cross Street chapel at Manchester. It was at the time the largest, wealthiest, and most influential congregation of Dissenters in the town and district, and he remained there for thirty years until his death. Thomas Ballantyne 1806 1871 , was a Scottish journalist . Biography Ballantyne was a native of Paisley , where he was born in 1806. Becoming editor of the Bolton Free Press , he at an early period of his life took an active part in advocating social and political reforms. While editor of the Manchester Guardian he became intimately associated with Richard Cobden and John Bright in their agitation against the Corn Laws , and in 1841 he published the Corn Law Repealer s Handbook . Along with Bright he was one of the four original proprietors of the Manchester Examiner , his name appearing as the printer and publisher. After the fusion of the Examiner with the Times , he became editor of the Liverpool Journal , and later of the Mercury . Subsequently he moved to London to edit the Leader , and he was for a time associated with Charles Mackay in the editorial department of the Illustrated London News . He also started the Statesman , which he edited till its close, when he became editor of the Old St. James s Chronicle . Thomas Baines 1806 1881 , was an English journalist and local historian . Baines was born at Leeds in 1806, the third son of the late Edward Baines , M.P. In 1829 he settled in Liverpool as editor of the Liverpool Times newspaper, and for thirty years was an active promoter of liberal interests in Lancashire . In 1852 he published a valuable history of the commerce and town of Liverpool, and in 1867 Lancashire and Cheshire Past and Present, having in 1859 settled in London at the Liverpool Office as a parliamentary agent. His last work, Yorkshire Past and Present, was published in 1875 and on 31 October 1881, he died at his residence, Seaforth Hall , near Liverpool. Two minor books of his were Agricultural Resources of Great Britain and the Colonies, and Observations on the River Plate. His county histories are characterised by fulness of details, clearness of statement, and orderly arrangement. Thomas Byerley died 1826 , pseudonyms Reuben Percy and Stephen Collet , was an English journalist and compiler of the Percy Anecdotes . Life He was the brother of Sir John Byerley. Becoming a writer, he was editor of the Literary Chronicle , and assistant editor of the The Star London The Star newspaper. He was also editor of The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction , from 1823 till his death, on 28 July 1826. Works Under the pseudonym of Stephen Collet, Byerley published Relics of Literature , London, 1823, 8vo, a collection of miscellanies, including a long article, reprinted in 1875, on graphology . He is best known for The Percy Anecdotes , 20 vols., London, 1821 3, 12mo. These volumes, which came out in forty four monthly parts, were supposedly written by Sholto and Reuben Percy, brothers of the Benedictine monastery of Mount Benger . Reuben Percy was Byerley, and Sholto Percy was Joseph Clinton Robertson . The name of the collection was taken from the Percy coffee house in Rathbone Place in Fitzrovia , where Byerley and Robertson used to meet.
