  1. Thomas Carlyle (Scottish lawyer)

Thomas Carlyle July 17, 1803 January 28, 1855 was born in King s Grange near Dumfries in Scotland . He studied and finished law at University of Edinburgh . In 1824 he was registered as lawyer at the Scottish bar. In October 1824 he inherited the title Baron Carlyle of Torthorwald . From 1830 on, he came in contact with the Scottish reverend Edward Irving and was named apostle of the Catholic Apostolic Church on 1 May 1835. He took responsibility for Northern Germany. He is not to be confused with his more well known namesake, Thomas Carlyle , the man of letters, born a few years earlier, also in Scotland. He too was connected to Irving, who introduced him to his wife, Jane Welsh Carlyle Jane Welsh . One biographer asserts that the similarities did cause confusion As a double goer , perplexing strangers in foreign parts as well as at home, the Apostle was occasionally an innocent, inadvertent nuisance to our Tom . ref Carlyle Till Marriage 1795 to 1826 by David Alec Wilson, 1923. 1. Thomas Carlyle and His Works

Thoreauviana expanded Core Thomas Carlyle and His Works is an essay written by Henry David Thoreau that praises the writings of Thomas Carlyle . It demonstrates a few themes that show up elsewhere in Thoreau s writings. First of these is Thoreau s eagerness to find a hero. Carlyle wrote the book On Heroes, Hero Worship, and the Heroic in History , which Thoreau considered his crowning achievement. While Thoreau as a young man is still looking for a hero to model himself after, he knows that ultimately he will have to cast models aside. He felt that the problem with religion was that when a Christ or a Buddha discovered something magnificent and important, people then spent their lives celebrating or arguing about the discovery but never bothering to try and discover it themselves. He wrote in his journal blockquote It is remarkable that the highest intellectual mood which the world tolerates is the perception of truth of the most ancient revelations, now in some respects out of date but any direct revelation, any original thoughts, it hates like virtue. The fathers and the mothers of the town would rather hear the young man or young woman at their tables express reverence for some old statement of the truth than utter a direct revelation themselves. They don t want to have any prophets born into their families spaced ndash damn them So far as thinking is concerned, surely original thinking is the divinest thing.
