The eldest son of John Hope 1739 1785 John Hope , he studied law at Edinburgh University . He was admitted as an Faculty of Advocates advocate in 1784 and was appointed sheriff of Orkney in 1792. He was Member of Parliament for Edinburgh UK Parliament constituency Edinburgh from 1803 to 1805. He was appointed Lord Advocate from 1801 to 1804. He was raised to the bench as Lord Granton and served as Lord Justice Clerk from 1804 to 1811, when he was promoted to be Lord Justice General Lord President of Court of Session an office he held until 1841. He became Lord Justice General when that office was united with the office of Lord President in 1836. He was appointed a Privy Council of the United Kingdom Privy Counsellor in 1822. Biography He was the eldest of Thomas Hope 1769 1831 and Louisa de la Poer Beresford s three sons, but was estranged from his brothers including Alexander James Beresford Hope when he inherited their father s art collections, wealth and property along with those of their uncle Henry Phillip Hope died 1839 . He entered a political career after an education at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge 1825 29 . ref Venn HP825HT ref He also founded the Art Union of London and the Royal Botanical Society , as well as serving as vice president of the Society of Arts and president of the Surrey Archaeological Society. Displaying his old masters collection to the public at his London house on Duchess Street, a mansion at 116 Piccadilly and at Deepdene, Surrey , he was also a patron to idealists such as Young England and the Spanish Carlist s and helped organise the 1851 Great Exhibition . He also bought and restored the Castleblayney estate in County Monaghan .     unreferenced date July 2008 Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun Order of the Thistle KT 1681 26 February 1742 was a Scotland Scottish nobleman. He was the son of John Hope of Hopetoun, grandson of Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet of Craighall, Fife. John Hope purchased the feudal barony barony of Niddry Castle from George Seton, 4th Earl of Winton around 1680. He also bought the neighbouring barony of Abercorn , with the office of heritable sheriff of the County of Linlithgow, from Sir Walter Seton. In 1684, John Hope was shire commissioner for Linlithgow in the Parliament of Scotland . Created Earl of Hopetoun in the Peerage of Scotland in 1703, he supported the Act of Union, 1707 union with England . He later served as a Scottish representative peer at Westminster, from 1722 until his death. Lord Hopetoun acted as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1723, and was Governor of the Bank of Scotland from 1740 until his death. He was created a Order of the Thistle Knight of the Thistle in 1738. Admitted as an Faculty of Advocates advocate in 1605, he made his reputation by defence of John Forbes 1568? 1634 , and other ministers at Linlithgow in 1606. He prepared the deed revoking James I of England James VI s grants of church property in 1625. He was appointed Lord Advocate in 1626, and held the office until 1641. He was created a Baronetage of Nova Scotia Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1628. He conducted the case against John Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Balmerino in 1634. As Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1643, he maintained the king s temporizing policy. In 1645 Hope was appointed one of the Commissioners for managing the Exchequer , but died the next year. Two of his sons appointed to the bench while he was Lord Advocate and it being judged by the Court of Session unbecoming that a father should plead uncovered before his children, the privilege of wearing his hat, while pleading, was granted to him. This privilege his successors in the office of Lord Advocate have ever since enjoyed, though it is now in danger of being lost through desuetude. His Practical Observations Upon divers titles of the Law of Scotland , commonly called the Minor Practicks were published in 1726.
