Life Born at Ubley , Somerset , he was the son of William Thomas Puritan William Thomas 1593 1667 , rector of Ubley. He graduated B.A. from Peterhouse, Cambridge , in 1649, and was incorporated at Oxford on 20 August 1651. Early years Born in Hawfields, North Carolina Hawfields , Orange County, North Carolina , he attended Bingham s Academy in Hillsborough, North Carolina Hillsborough , then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , graduating in 1832. He was admitted to the bar in 1834 and began to practice law in Wadesboro, North Carolina in 1835. Politics In 1842, Ashe was elected to a single term in the North Carolina House of Commons , from 1847 to 1851 he was solicitor of the fifth judicial district of North Carolina, and in 1854, he served in the North Carolina Senate . During the American Civil War , Ashe served in the Confederate House of Representatives from 1861 to 1864, and was elected to the Confederate Senate in 1864, but the war concluded before he was able to serve. In 1866, Ashe was state counselor for North Carolina , and in 1868, he ran unsuccessfully for Governor of North Carolina Governor . He was a U.S. Naval Reserve Lieutenant J.G. from 1956 to 1962, serving on active duty from 1956 to 1959. He entered private practice in Seattle, Washington , working from 1962 to 1988. He was a Judge pro tem, Seattle Municipal Court, Washington from 1972 to 1980. Details He was 25 years old, and a temporary lieutenant in the C Battery 63rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery , British Army during the World War I First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 20 November 1917 at Gonnelieu , France , when the personnel of Lieutenant Wallace s battery were reduced to five, having lost their commander and five sergeants, and were surrounded by enemy infantry, he maintained the firing of the guns by swinging the trails close together, the men running and loading from gun to gun. He was in action for eight hours firing the whole time and inflicting severe casualties on the enemy. Then, owing to the exhausted state of his men, he withdrew when the infantry supports arrived, taking with him all essential gun parts and all wounded.
