His revolvers were used during the Crimean War , the Indian rebellion of 1857 Indian Mutiny , the U.S. Civil War , and the Anglo Zulu War . Career Dean and Adams File Percussion revolver Adams system IMG 3246.jpg thumb Adams Revolver, made by Durussel in Morges circa 1860. On display at Morges military museum Adams was the manager for the London arms manufacturers George & John Deane . On August 22, 1851, he was granted a British patent for a new revolver design. The .436 Dean and Adams was a five shot percussion cap percussion cap and ball revolver with a spurless hammer, and the first revolver with a solid frame. The revolver used a double action only system in which the external hammer could not be cocked by thumbing it back, like most other pistols of the era, but instead cocked itself when the trigger was pulled. This made it possible to fire the gun much more rapidly than contemporary trigger firearms single action revolvers, such as the Samuel Colt Colt , which had to be cocked prior to each shot. The Dean and Adams revolver was shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and subsequently approved by the British Army s Small Arms Committee in addition to being adopted by the East India Company for use by their cavalry. Orders for the revolver were great enough to prompt the Deane brothers to ...   more details

THIS SECTION WILL NOT DISPLAY, PLEASE DO NOT DELETE Image Hitchhiker Luxemburg 1977.jpg thumb 200px Hitchhiking was a common mode of transport on the hippie trail The hippie trail is a term used to describe the journeys taken by hippie s and others in the 1960s and 70s from Europe overland to and from southern Asia , mainly India , Pakistan and Nepal . One of the key motivations was the desire to travel as cheaply as possible, mainly to extend the length of time away from home, and so journeys were carried out by thumbing hitchhiking , or cheap, private bus es that travelled the route. There were also train s that traveled part of the way, particularly across Eastern Europe through Turkey with a ferry connection across Lake Van and to Tehran or east to Mashhad , Iran . From these cities, public or private transportation could then be obtained for the rest of the trip. These journeys evoked the 17th and 18th century tradition of the Grand Tour . The route s Such journeys would typically start from countries in western Europe, often London or Amsterdam . Many from the United States US took Icelandic Airlines to Luxembourg city Luxembourg . Most journeys passed through Istanbul , from where routes divided. The usual northern route passed through Tehran , Herat , Kabul , Peshawar and Lahore to India. An alternative route was from Turkey via Syria , Jordan , and Iraq to Iran and Pakistan. All travellers had to cross the Pakistan India border at Ganda Singh Wala or later at Wagah . Delhi , Varanasi then called Benares , Goa state Goa , Kathmandu , or Bangkok were the usual destinations in the east.
