Riedel was a pioneer in the surgical treatment of appendicitis and cholecystitis , and in 1888 is credited with performing the first choledochoduodenostomy anastomosis of the common bile duct to the duodenum . Professor Ivan Maurice Roitt born 30 September 1927 was educated at King Edward s School, Birmingham and Balliol College , Oxford University . In 1956, together with Deborah Doniach and Peter Campbell , he made the classic discovery of thyroglobulin autoantibodies in Hashimoto s thyroiditis which helped to open the whole concept of a relationship between Autoimmune diseases autoimmunity and human disease.
