Mongol zurag lang mn M , Mongol painting is a style of painting in Mongolia n art. Developed in the early 20th century, zurag is characterised by the depiction of secular, nationalist themes in a traditional mineral paint on cotton medium similar to Tibetan thangka . It is thus distinguished from both traditional Buddhist art Buddhist fine art and the socialist realism favoured during the Mongolian People s Republic . The style was pioneered in the aftermath of the Outer Mongolian Revolution of 1921 1921 Revolution by artists such as Balduugiin Sharav , whose One Day in Mongolia remains one of the most celebrated works of Mongolian art. Zurag paintings featuring scenes from everyday life, in both contemporary collective farm and traditional Nomadic pastoralism pastoral nomadic settings, became popular in the 1950s and 1960s in the wake of the success of rjingiin Yadams ren s The Old Fiddler . Historical depictions of the 1921 Revolution as well as earlier national figures were also popular, but overtly religious themes were discouraged by the state. Since the 1990 Democratic Revolution in Mongolia establishment of democracy in 1992 there has been a resurgence of interest in the style. Recent zurag paintings have featured nationalistic scenes drawn from the Secret History of the Mongols and the life of Genghis Khan , as well overtly religious imagery inspired by pre Buddhist Tengriism shamanism . They have also become more symbolic and less strictly representational. Throughout its history zurag has encompassed a diverse range of visual styles. Flat, brightly coloured shading in the Buddhist tradition is used alongside European style Realist visual arts realism and geometric perspective . Some zurag artists co opted older Buddhist iconographic conventions for purely secular topics. Refimprove date June 2011 The Ming Dynasty military conquests were instrumental to its hold on power during the early stages of the Ming Dynasty . TOC left Hongwu reign 1368 98 Early in his reign, Zhu Yuanzhang , the first Ming emperor, laid down instructions to later generations that included advice to the Chief Military Commission on those countries that posed a threat to the Ming polity, and those that did not. He stated that those to the north were dangerous, while those to the south did not constitute a threat, and were not to be subject to attack. Yet, either despite this, or as a result of it, it was the polities to the south that suffered the greatest effects of Ming expansion over the following century. Establishing a power base in his own city at Akkad , he then Battle of Uruk conquered the powerful city of Uruk , seizing hegemony over all the other city states of Sumer . He came to control the rest of Mesopotamia as far as Ebla in Syria , creating an empire covering roughly the area of modern day Iraq . His campaigns may well have extended as far as Cyprus and Anatolia . Although later sources credit him with around a 54 year reign, actual dated documents have been found for only four different year names in his reign. The year names describe campaigns waged against Elam , Mari, Syria Mari , and Simurrum a Hurrian region . One inscription tells that he won 34 battles another suggests that he had a standing army, recording that 5,400 soldiers eat bread before him each day . Sargon s infantry probably used bronze weapons and composite bows, and he would have also possessed four wheeled chariots pulled by Donkey asses . This army could cope with siege warfare, since records tell of Sargon destroying the walls of the cities he captured. Sargon died about 2284 BCE and his empire survived for more than 125 more years. Later Mesopotamians regarded him as the founder of the region s tradition of expansion by military conquest as exemplified by Assyrian Empire , the Babylonian Empire , and the Persian Empire .
