unreferenced date June 2009 bot yes Portal Middle earth In J. R. R. Tolkien s fictional universe of Middle earth , the time is typically rendered in Ages. Ages are one calendar era epoch of the Valar. Before the arising of the Sun Middle earth Sun they were approximately one thousand Valian Years in length the exact length of a Valian Year varied in different drafts of Tolkien s texts from close to 10 Sun years in most versions to precisely 144 Sun years in his final estimation . After the Sun, Ages sped up and length is more variable. The Years of the Sun began with the 30th Valian Age, and the Fourth Age of Middle earth began with the 37th Valian Age. Its subtitle is a study of the forms of life, thought and art in France and the Netherlands in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries . In it, he presents the idea that the exaggerated formality and romanticism of late medieval noble court court society was a defense mechanism against the constantly increasing violence and brutality of general society. He saw the period as one of pessimism, cultural exhaustion, and nostalgia, rather than of rebirth and optimism. Huizinga s work has later come under criticism, especially for relying too heavily on evidence from the rather exceptional case of the Duchy of Burgundy Burgundian court. Empires of the MiddleAges is a board game for two to six players which simulates grand strategy and diplomacy in the MiddleAges . It was first released by Simulations Publications, Inc. in 1980 in games 1980 . Each player in EOMA controls an empire composed of areas, each of which is rated for wealth, religion, language and population. The talents of each empire s current ruler are represented by numerical ratings for warfare, administration, and diplomacy. The object of the game is essentially to grow an empire in terms of wealth, geography and stability. Development EOMA was designed by James Dunnigan , a prolific game designer and writer. However, often a Dunnigan design would consist of no more than a four page outline on a legal pad and a developer would then take over, doing the lion s share of the work and completing the project. Fact date April 2009 In this case, this was done by Anthony F. Buccini who also received a designer s credit. A third design credit went to Redmond A. Simonsen , who was responsible for all the graphical features of the game and likely played a significant role in development as well. Fact date April 2009 Game play The game is played in turns representing five years, and each player may attempt one endeavor for each year. Endeavors may be diplomatic, economic such as taxation or military in nature. Central to the game are two decks of cards, Event and Year cards. Event cards create random events such as pandemic plague , famine or Schism religion schism , while Year cards are used to resolve endeavors. A key element is the ever present possibility of civil unrest and other military and political threats. Historians of England in the MiddleAges helped to lay the groundwork for modern historical historiography , providing vital accounts of the early history of England , Wales and Normandy , its cultures, and revelations about the historians themselves. ref The term English in the context of this article also includes Welsh and Norman authors who wrote about history relevant to England. ref The most remarkable period of historical writing was during the High MiddleAges in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, when English chronicles produced works with a variety of interest, wealth of information and amplitude of range. However one might choose to view the reliability or nature of particular works, it is from these that much of our knowledge of the MiddleAges originates. Early MiddleAges Prior to the boom in historical writing in the High MiddleAges, the number and quality of works from England s earlier period is often lacking, with some notable and bright exceptions. Later historians lamented the gaps in this period and usually explained it by way of Viking invasions in the twelfth century William of Malmesbury said in many places in England that knowledge of the deeds of the saints has been wiped out, in my opinion by the violence of enemies.. . ref William of Malmesbury , Gesta pontificum , ed. Due to rare mentions in sources and a lack of data it is largely unknown to historians. It is mentioned by Paul the Deacon at the end of the 8th century, who characterises it as Carniola, patria Sclavorum Carniola, the Homeland of Slavs . The capital of Carniola was Carnium , nowadays Kranj. Peter tih , the Slovenian specialist in Middle Ages, characterised the Carniolans as a separate tribe with its own ethnic identity. Some historians are of opinion that Carniola was not a principality but only a region.
