File MountTmolus Bozdag Turkey.jpg thumb 200px Bozda ancient Mount Tmolus is associated with the accounts surrounding Tmolus Tmolus lang grc was a List of Kings of Lydia King of Lydia and husband to Omphale . He is the eponymous namesake of Mount Tmolus modern Bozda , which lies in Lydia with the Lydians Lydian capital later also called Sardis at its foot and Hypaepa on its southern slope. In Greek mythology he figures as a mountain god , a son of Ares and Theogone and he judged the musical contest between Pan god Pan and Apollo god Apollo . When Tmolus was gored to death by a bull on the mountain that bears his name, his widow, Omphale, became Queen regnant of Lydia. Through her, Lydian reign passed into the hands of the Tylonid Heraclid dynasty. The geography of Tmolus and the contest between Pan and Apollo are mentioned in Ovid s Metamorphoses poem Metamorphoses , XI.168. It has been suggested that there could be another personality named Tmolus, a mythical king of Lydia , a son of Sipylus and Chthonia , and the husband of Plouto and stepfather of Tantalus . 1. List of kings of Lydia

This page lists the kings of Lydia , an ancient kingdom in western Anatolia . The Greeks of Homer s time knew Lydia as Maeonia, which was probably an earlier name for the country. Three dynasties are mentioned by the ancient sources the first is wholly mythical, the second begins in myth but emerges into the light of historical record, and the third is wholly real. The earliest of these is contemporary with the rebellious governor Madduwatta Madduwattas of Zippasla and his successor Tarkhundaradu, mentioned in Hittites Hittite records but any identification between them is speculation. Atyads Tantalids Herodotus gives the eponymous Manes as the first king of Maeonia, with a son named Atys Atyllus . Other sources, such as Strabo , name Tmolus and his son Tantalus as kings of the region at the same time, ruling from Sipylus . 1. Manes (king)

Manes according to Greek mythology was the eponymous first king of Maeonia , and later came to be known as the first king in line of the primordial house of Lydia , the Atyad dynasty see List of Kings of Lydia . Manes was believed to be a son of Gaia mythology Gaia and Zeus . Herodotus, in his account of the colonization of Tyrrhenia History Herodotus Book 1 94 , makes Manes the father of king Atys ref cite book title The history of Herodotus a new English version, ed. with copious notes and appendices, illustrating the history and geography of Herodotus, from the most recent sources of information and embodying the chief results, historical and ethnographical, which have been obtained in the progress of cuneiform and hieroglyphical discovery author Herodotus, George Rawlinson , Sir Henry Rawlinson, 1st Baronet Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson , John Gardner Wilkinson Sir John Gardner Wilkinson publisher D. Appleton & Co., New York year 1859 1861 language English ref Later, Herodotus states Book 4 45 that Cotys King of Maeonia Cotys was Manes son, and Asies his grandson for whom the Lydians believed Asia had been named. This genealogy is preserved by Dionysius of Halicarnassus . The exact relationship between the names Maeonia and Lydia, named after Lydus , son of Atys and grandson or great grandson of Manes, remains a matter of debate. They may have been successive names for one country, or different parts of the same realm. In what could be an error rather than independent tradition, Strabo makes Atys, son or grandson of Manes, to be one of the descendants of Omphale and Heracles , the founders of the next dynasty of Tylonid dynasty Tylonids or Tylonid dynasty Heraclids &mdash Omphale having reigned as Queen of Lydia after the death of her husband Tmolus , and Heracles having been first her slave then her husband.
