Refimprove date October 2011 POV date January 2012 The term Toltec is used in the works of writer Carlos Castaneda to denote a person who was recruited into a band of sorcerors with a tradition that had its origin in the Native American culture of that name. The nagual Juan described the Toltecs to Castaneda as a guild of sorcerors that began in Southern Mexico 10,000 years ago, originally based on harnessing the changes of perception and perspective brought about by working with power plants. The Fire From Within The New Seers The primary purpose of the Toltec sorcerors is to prevent the disintegration of the self, which normally happens at death. To achieve that purpose, they evolved a set of techniques and developed a body of knowledge that enables the sorceror to transform into a high speed inorganic being with an endless lifespan not unlike the spiritual notion of Ascending the body, but without the baggage . Castaneda makes it clear that his use of the term Toltec is specialized, so that it is not directly equivalent to the Toltec people or culture referred to in the ethnohistory and mythology of pre Columbian Mesoamerica. The ongoing Toltec tradition had its beginning in the Toltec culture, but now those who are recruited are chosen for their suitability, rather than on ethnic or cultural lines. Castaneda recounts that he was recruited in 1960, and paints a word picture of the methods and concepts in the guise of conversations with his teacher, who he calls Don Juan in the series ... as being fiction, largely because the Toltec reality map is an uncompromising contradiction of conventional ... threats is a necessary theme in Toltec education. The San Juan Express was a narrow gauge train that ran on the 3  ft Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad route from Durango, Colorado via Chama, NM , Cumbres Pass and Antonito, CO to Pueblo, Colorado . The Express ran until the early 1950s and most of the narrow gauge trackage has since been abandoned. The only surviving narrow gauge track from the San Juan route is the 64 mile long Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad between Antonito and Chama, which calls its westbound train the Colorado Limited and its eastbound the New Mexico Express. Notable areas The most notable area of the trip is Cumbres Pass at an altitude of 3,046m above sea level. Nearby is the lunch house at Osier, CO where present day Cumbres & Toltec trains stop for lunch. Frequently used engines One of the most frequently used engines on this route was and still is the D&RGW K 36 . Other locomotives used on this route included the D&RGW K 27 , the D&RGW K 28 , and the D&RGW K 37 , and occasionlly the D&RGW C 18 . One K 27 and one K 37 are used on the Cumbres & Toltec, with C 18 D&RGW 315 periodically visiting both the Durango and Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec. Sections used today The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad uses the portion from Antonio, CO to Chama, NM. In Aztec legendary tradition Huemac floruit fl. 11th C.? , also spelled Hueymac or Huehmac , is described as being the last monarch king of the equally legendary and semi mythical Toltec state before the fall of Tula, Hidalgo Tula Tollan . His name is traditionally translated as Big Hand , but other scholars maintain the more succinct translation is Big Gift . ref See Andrews 2003 , pp.601 602. ref All information about this figure stems from Aztec codices Aztec literature written centuries later. As with just about everything to do with the Toltecs , whom the Aztecs and other central Mesoamerica n cultures of the Mesoamerican chronology Postclassic era held up as their valiant precursors whose legacy and authority they inherited, actual and discernible historical data is scant. A number of contemporary Mesoamerican studies question whether the Toltec existed as a coherent state or group at all, and likewise whether Huemac was an actual figure remains highly debatable. After the fall of the Toltec capital Huemac traveled for some years with a diminishing band of followers, and then died in a cave at Chapultepec , now part of modern Mexico City . The date of his death, from various accounts and various attempts to correlate the accounts with the Gregorian calendar , range from the 1090s to the 1170s.
