Multiple issues orphan September 2010 no footnotes January 2011 tone January 2011 The Tomb of the Known Soldier is a monument in the Rome, Georgia Rome , Georgia US state Georgia United States , dedicated to a soldier killed in World War I Private Charles Graves Charles Graves enlisted in the Army on August 16, 1917 he was eighteen years old at the time. He was eventually shipped to Neuroy , France, a place he knew nothing about. On October 5, 1918 fourteen months after arriving , Graves was killed in the city by German artillery. Soon after, he received full military honors and a military burial in France. Charles mother received the telegram that her son was killed in the war. After waiting four long years, she finally claimed her son s body when he arrived on a troopship called the Cambria ship Cambria on March 29, 1922. She planned to have him buried in a family plot in East Rome, Georgia in Antioch Cemetery. Little did she know that Congress picked him to represent the Known Soldier for the United States. Although Congress planned to bury him next to the Tomb of the UnknownSoldierUnknownSoldier , they respected her wishes and returned him to his home in Georgia where he was buried in Antioch Cemetery on April 6. 1922. Graves, a fallen soldier, failed to remain in the cemetery for a long period of time many local citizens decided that he should be buried in a place of honor. As a result, on September 22, 1923, his body was exhumed from Antioch Cemetery and relocated to Myrtle Hill Cemeter y however, his body would not rest for long. Upon his mother s death, his brother agreed with government officials to again relocate his body to a pre determined plot located in Myrtle Cemetery. His fourth and final reburial occurred on November 11, 1923. Today, Graves final resting place is known as the tomb of the Known Soldier.
