COI date October 2010 The Catalina 38 is a Sloop sloop rigged sailboat manufactured by Catalina Yachts of Woodland Hills, Los Angeles Woodland Hills , California from 1977 to 1990. A total of 366 hulls were produced. The boat evolved from a custom racing boat created by the American yacht design firm of Sparkman & Stephens this hull form was later purchased by the Yankee Boat Company of Marina del Rey , California , which built approximately 30 Yankee 38 s before the business failed. Frank Butler founder Frank Butler of Catalina Yachts purchased the molds from Yankee. Butler redesigned the interior and give the boat a Catalina styled deck. He lengthened the mast, shortened the boom, and changed the skeg hung rudder to a balanced spade design. Butler s changes resulted in a faster boat, and the Catalina 38 was selected to replace the Cal 40 as the official boat of the Congressional Cup , one of the top match race match racing regattas in the world. The Catalina eddy , also called the coastal Eddy fluid dynamics eddy , is a localized weather phenomenon that occurs in the so called Southern California Bight Bight of California , the mostly convex portion of the Southern California coast running from Point Conception to San Diego . The Catalina eddy leads to the chilly May Gray and June gloom that is so much a part of the late spring and early summer weather in Southern California. The eddy gets its name from Santa Catalina Island, California Santa Catalina Island , the Channel Islands of California Channel Island closest to the Los Angeles Long Beach area the center of an eddy is often located above or near the island. While a Catalina eddy can develop at any time of the year, it is most common between April and September and peaks in June. During these months, upper level northwesterly flow along the California coast is directed onshore by the Channel Islands offshore. When the flow is blocked by the mountains that ring the Los Angeles Basin to the east and north, a counterclockwise vortex is created. As temperatures drop after sunset, the marine layer deepens and coastal stratus cloud s thicken. While the vortex is relatively small, rarely more than 100 miles 160 km in diameter, it can extend into inland valleys and even into the southwestern Mojave Desert . A very strong Catalina eddy can be as deep as 6000 feet 1.8 km .
