The person who plays this kind of music might be called speleman Swedish Norwegian , spelman music spelman Swedish , spel l emann Norwegian , pelimanni Finnish or spillemand Danish . Finnish traditional dance music is often called pelimanni music in English, while there does not seem to exist a similar, widespread term for the corresponding music from the other countries. It is often more meaningful to distinguish between the traditional dance music from different regions than between music from the countries as such. DEFAULTSORT Traditional Bluegrass Category Bluegrass musicMusic genre stub ...Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Traditional bluegrass , as the name implies, emphasizes the traditional elements of bluegrass music , and stands in opposition to progressive bluegrass . Traditional bluegrass musicians play folk songs, tunes with simple traditional chord progressions, and on acoustic instrument s of a type that were played by bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys band in the late 1940s. Traditional bands may use their instruments in slightly different ways for example playing the banjo by the claw hammer style, or using multiple guitars or fiddles in a band. In traditional bluegrass, the guitar rarely takes the lead, instead acting as a rhythm instrument, one notable exception being Gospel music gospel based songs . Melodies and lyrics tend to be simple, often in the key of G , and a I IV V chord pattern is common. Although traditional bluegrass performers do not use electrically amplified instruments, as used in other forms of popular music, it is common practice to microphone mike acoustic instruments during stage performances before larger audiences. There are ideological divisions even among traditional bluegrass bands. These divisions center on the longstanding debate about what constitutes Bluegrass Music. Most traditional bluegrass musicians don t consider progressive bluegrass to truly be bluegrass, some going so far as to suggest bluegrass must be styled directly after Bill Monroe s bands. However, stylistic divergences in traditional bluegrass generally center around which first generation bands from which contemporary musicians have drawn inspiration. Examples include bands who sing in the Stanley Brothers tradition Roy Lee Centers , Larry Sparks , Sammy Adkins, The Fields Bros, The Wilson Brothers, The Gillis Brothers and various local bands across the country. Other bands followed Lester Flatt , such as Willis ... more details

A Traditional singer is someone who has learned folk songs in their original context for example while sailing a ship or working on a farm. Until modern inventions such as the phonograph radio and cinema became common, this was the only way for ordinary people to learn songs. By the time of the first world war it became clear that people living in the countryside were preserving songs that were no longer sung in the cities. Scholarly collectors went to gatherings of country people to collect songs and tunes and publish them. The phrase old time musician is used commonly in the USA to designate the preservers of the musical styles of the nineteenth century. The phrase source singer is sometimes used. The oldest songs and the most complete versions of songs were particularly sought out. Traditional singers were almost all born before the second world war. After 1950 it became difficult for anyone to avoid hearing popular songs on the radio, and the tradition became diluted. However some singers tried to emulate the old er styles. The phrase Tradition Bearer is sometimes used for the most dedicated proponents of folk songs. Often they concentrate on songs from a particular county or country for example Frank Harte concentrated on Dublin street songs. Sometimes they preserve the local dialect and the exact phrases used by particularly admired traditional singers. Since 1982 the USA has given a National Heritage Fellowship to artists and musicians promoting traditional styles. In the UK singers such as Martin Carthy , Shirley Collins and Maddy Prior have been awarded MBEs for their role as tradition bearers. On their albums they often mention particular traditional singers who inspired them. Examples of traditional singers From England Joseph Taylor 1832 after 1908 Harry Cox ...
