About botanical transplantingtransplanting of organs Organ transplant For botanical organ anatomy organ transplant, see Grafting Refimprove date December 2009 In agriculture and gardening , transplanting or replanting is the technique of moving a plant from one location to another. Most often this takes the form of starting a plant from seed in optimal conditions, such as in a greenhouse or protected Plant nursery nursery bed , then replanting it in another, usually outdoor, growing location. Botanical transplants are used infrequently and carefully because they carry with them a significant risk of killing the plant. ref Basics of horticulture Simson, Straus. Oxford Book Company, Edition 2010 ref Transplanting has a variety of applications, including extending the growing season by starting plants indoors, before outdoor conditions are favorable protecting young plants from disease s and pest organism pests until they are sufficiently established avoiding germination problems by setting out seedling s instead of direct seeding . Different species and varieties react differently to transplanting for some, it is not recommended. In all cases, avoiding transplant shock &mdash the stress or damage received in the process&mdash is the principal concern. Plants raised in protected conditions usually need a period of acclimatization , known as Cold hardening hardening off . Also, root disturbance should be minimized. The stage of growth at which transplanting takes place, the weather conditions during transplanting, and treatment immediately after transplanting are other important factors. Image Potting bench red and white.jpg 300px right A Potting bench or gardening table is a kind of workbench used for small gardening tasks such as transplanting seedlings. A basic potting bench has a work surface at bench height, comfortable for a standing person and storage for potting soil, pots, and tools. The same furniture is often also used to display potted plants, even indoors. Image Potting bench county clerk.jpg 200px right Since this type of furniture is often exposed to soil, water, and sunlight, it must be made from weather resistant materials if it is not to decay rapidly. Cedar wood is a popular choice. Plastic potting benches are cheaper and, for those who can afford it, there is teak . Metal construction may be considered if corrosion can be controlled. Some potting benches are small and portable others are fixed into the side of a greenhouse . As they are often custom built by the individual gardener, there is considerable variation in style. Some designs include a dry sink for soil storage, a water or drain hookup, and or a cold frame . Plans are widely available for do it yourself construction. Description Pachysandra terminalis is a slow growing groundcover with alternate, simple leaf leaves , and creeping stems. The flowers are white, borne in late March and throughout the month of April. It is evergreen but the leaves may yellow in winter and is very cold hardy. When group planted, the plant forms a dense carpet of glossy green leaves to a height of 6 10 inches. Cultivation Pachysandra terminalis grows in partial to deep shade. It prefers a moist, well drained soil in full shade that is both acidic and rich and so a peaty soil with fertiliser applied is suitable. However, the plant is tolerant of periodically dry soils and is tolerant of soils of neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Pachysandra terminalis can be propagated by dividing and transplanting clumps, by rooting stem cuttings, or by removing plantlets that have grown through the spread of roots from the main plant.
