  1. Northampton's tunnels

Image Cole roper northampton 1810.jpg thumb right 250px Northampton is a large market town and a Non metropolitan district local government district in central England upon the River Nene , and the county town of Northamptonshire its history goes back many centuries with much of the present town s development taking place during medieval times. Underground Today underneath the modern streets there still remains a labyrinth of tunnels, along with many cellars and ancient crypts. Many of these cellars are thought to have originated from the church buildings, that today are centred around All Saints Church for instance underneath the Northampton & County Club in George Row opposite the church can be seen some fine vaulted cellars. Similar tunnels can be seen on the other side of the church at Drum Lane underneath the Shipmans public house. John Speed s map of Northampton from 1610 show that the church was then the largest landowner in the town. Clashes took place over the years between the church and the monarchy such as the banning of markets being held in the churchyards. It is thought that various of these tunnels were established as some sort of escape routes for the clergy for use in times of trouble. The various religious houses in early times were found at all the main 8 compass points giving rise to a series of radial tunnels heading out from All Saints Church at the centre of town to the various houses. 1. Assize of Northampton

The Assize of Northampton , largely based on the Assize of Clarendon of 1166, is among a series of measures taken by King Henry II of England that solidified the rights of the knightly tenants and made all possession of land subject to and guaranteed by royal law. The assize is believed to have been passed at a council held in Northampton in January 1176. The assize contained severe penalties for various offences and gave the justices substantial powers at the expense of the sheriff s. The assize is connected with the reorganisation of itinerant justices and contains instructions for six groups of justices appointed to tour the country. Later clauses deal with the introduction of important new legislation, chiefly the king s right to have certain cases brought into his court. The assize was a strong response to a crime wave then being experienced and gave additional powers to the authorities by creating new offences that a judge could examine, including arson and forgery, and set down new and severe punishments that could be handed down, including the removal of an offender s right hand. The Assize of Northampton is also the first official document to contain information on the possessory assizes of mort d ancestor and novel disseisin . 1. Edinburgh Agreement

Politics of the European Union The Edinburgh Agreement or Edinburgh Decision is a December 1992 agreement reached at a European Council meeting in Edinburgh , UK , that granted Denmark four exceptions to the Maastricht Treaty so that it could be ratified by Denmark. This was necessary because, without all member states of the European Union ratifying it, it could not come into effect. Denmark had first Danish Maastricht Treaty referendum, 1992 rejected the Maastricht treaty, but with the addition of the Edinburgh Agreement, ratified the treaty in a Danish Maastricht Treaty referendum, 1993 1993 referendum . The member states that already ratified the Maastricht Treaty, did not have to do so again. The four exceptions granted to Denmark are as follows Section A Citizenship The provisions of Part Two of the Treaty establishing the European Community relating to citizenship of the Union give nationals of the Member States additional rights and protection as specified in that Part. They do not in any way take the place of national citizenship. The question whether an individual possesses the nationality of a Member State will be settled solely by reference to the national law of the Member State concerned. With the adoption of a similar clause applying to all member states in the Amsterdam Treaty , this opt out is now de facto meaningless. Section B Economic and monetary union The Protocol on certain provisions relating to Denmark attached to the Treaty establishing the European Community gives Denmark the right to notify the Council of the European Communities of its position concerning participation in the third stage of Economic and Monetary Union . Denmark has given notification ... become an observer to that organisation. They also note that nothing in the Treaty on European Union ...
