Refimprove date December 2009 The Treaty of London was signed by the United Kingdom , France , and Russia on 6 July 1827. The three main Europe an powers had called upon Greece and the Ottoman Empire Turkey to cease hostilities. The Greeks had revolted against Ottoman rule on March 6, 1821. The revolt had continued since that time. After years of negotiation, the European allied powers had finally decided to intervene in the war on the side of the Greeks. The allied powers mainly wanted this treaty to cause the Ottoman Empire to create an independent Greek state. It stated that while the Ottoman Empire should recognize the independence of Greece, the Sultan would be the supreme ruler of Greece. However, the Ottoman Empire, basing its decision upon its supposedly superior navy naval force, declined to accept the treaty. The Treaty of London was signed between the United Kingdom and Transjordan on March 22, 1946 and came into force on June 17, 1946. ref name UN Treaty of Alliance between His Majesty in respect of the United Kingdom and His Highness the Amir of Transjordan. United Nations Treaty Series, vol 6, pp 143 175 http treaties.un.org doc Publication UNTS Volume 206 v6.pdf PDF ref The treaty concerned the sovereignty and independence of the Arab state of Transjordan, which would now be known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan with Emir Abdullah I of Jordan Abdullah I as its king. However, Britain would still maintain military bases within the country and continue to subsidize and support the Arab Legion . The Treaty of London superseded the former Anglo Transjordan mandate known as the Organic Law of 1928 . This former mandate liberalized several restrictions on Transjordan, however Great Britain still controlled financial matters and most foreign policy issues. It was then considered a step towards future independence. Transjordan s independence was recognized on April 18, 1946 by the League of Nations during the last meeting of that organization on April 18, 1946. When King Abdullah applied for membership in the newly formed United Nations , his request was vetoed by the Soviet Union , citing that the nation was not fully independent of British control. This resulted in another treaty in March 1948 with Britain in which all restrictions on sovereignty were removed. Despite this, Jordan was not a full member of the United Nations until December 14, 1955. unreferenced date September 2008 The Treaty of London also known as the Second Treaty of London was proposed by England , accepted by France , and signed in 1359. After Edward, the Black Prince Edward of Woodstook soundly defeated the French at Battle of Poitiers 1356 Poitiers during the Hundred Years War , where they captured Jean II of France , the French were forced to accept the terms of the English. Based on the terms of the accord, England was permitted to annex much of western France. However, it was later repudiated on 25 May by the French States General French Estates General , which felt that too much territory was being relinquished. This resulted in the English invasion of Calais , France on 28 October 1359. Eventually, the English were forced to accept the revised terms of the French and ultimately received Aquitaine . Use dmy dates date March 2012 The Treaty of London in 1864 was in regards to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland United Kingdom ceding the United States of the Ionian Islands to Greece . The United Kingdom had held an amical protectorate over the islands since the 1815 Treaty of Paris 1815 Treaty of Paris . The federated United States of the Ionian Islands included seven island states lying around the coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. Of the seven, six lay in the Ionian Sea , off Greece s western coast. These six states were Corfu Corf Kerkyra , Ithaca , Paxi Pax , Cephalonia , Zakynthos Zante Zakinthos and Lefkada Santa Maura Lefkas . Kythira Cerigo Kythera was also a state of the federation, although it is situated south of the Peloponnese. Ever since Greece had achieved independence in 1832, the people of the Ionian islands had resented foreign rule. At a Cabinet meeting in 1862, British Foreign Secretary Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston Palmerston , decided to cede the islands to Greece. This policy was also favoured by Queen Victoria . The practical reasoning was that maintenance of ownership in the area was too expensive. Besides, the islands did not have great strategic importance the United Kingdom would still maintain a strategic presence in the Mediterranean from the island of Malta .
