  1. Tethyan Trench

unreferenced date March 2008 The Tethyan Trench was an ancient oceanic trench that existed in the northern part of the Tethys Ocean during the middle Mesozoic to early Cenozoic era s. Geology The Tethyan Trench formed when the Cimmerian Plate was subduct ing under eastern Laurasia , around 200 million years ago, in the Early Jurassic . The Tethyan Trench extended at its greatest during Late Cretaceous to Paleocene , from what is now Greece to the Western Pacific Ocean . Subduction at the Tethyan Trench probably caused the continents Africa and India to move towards Eurasia , which resulted in the opening of the Indian Ocean. When the Arabian Plate Arabian and Indian plate s continental collision collided with Eurasia, the Tethys Ocean and the trench closed. Remnants of the Tethyan Trench can still be found today in Southeastern Europe and southwest of Southeast Asia . 1. Trench shield

Unreferenced date December 2006 Trench shields are steel or aluminum structures used for protecting utility worker s while performing their duties within a trench . They are customarily constructed with sidewalls of varying thicknesses held apart by steel or aluminum spreaders. Spreaders can be interchanged to match the width of the trench. The different materials and building designs lead to a variety of depth ratings, i.e. the depth of a trench that the shield can withstand a collapse without buckling. Depth ratings are determined by registered professional engineer s. A shield should not be confused with a shore. While they may serve the same function, trench shoring is a different physical application that holds up the walls of a trench to prevent collapse. 1. Trench shoring

File Sbh s600.JPG thumb File Sbh s780.JPG thumb Trench shoring is the process of bracing the walls of a trench in order to prevent collapse. The phrase can also be used as a noun to refer to the materials used in the process. Several methods can be used to shore up a trench. Hydraulic shoring is the use of hydraulic piston s that can be pumped outward until they press up against the trench walls. They are typically combined with steel plate or a special heavy plywood called Finform. Another method is called beam and plate, in which steel I beam s are driven into the ground and steel plates are slid in amongst them. A similar method that uses wood planks is called soldier boarding. Hydraulics tend to be faster and easier the other methods tend to be used for longer term applications or larger excavations. Shoring should not be confused with shielding by means of trench shield s. Shoring is designed to prevent collapse, whilst shielding is only designed to protect workers should collapse occur.
