  1. Trial practice

Legal education in the United States Trial practice is an upper level course offered in most American law school s designed to teach future litigation litigators the fine points of presenting a case to a judge and jury . Unlike most law school courses, a trial practice class has very little discussion of substantive law , and is focused on the practical application of public speaking , narrative , and using body language to communicate a particular set of events to the triers of fact. Trial practice also contains elements of strategy , teaching students how to decide the order in which witnesses should testify, when exhibits should be introduced, and how to trap opposing witnesses into giving testimony that damages their side. evidence law Evidence is the area of substantive law most reinforced by a trial practice course, with students learning how to apply evidence law in a real life setting, including learning when they can object to questions asked of witnesses, what objections to raise, and how to effectively present objections. Trial practice courses may have a classroom component. Also, trial practice courses will usually have an ongoing lab component where an attorney will instruct a small group of students on trial skills and assist them in honing their craft. Often, students practice against one another in mock trial s throughout the course for example, students may be divided into groups of 4, with each group containing two teams who practice against one another in mock trials. Rather than a final exam , the course may culminate in a mock trial with volunteer witnesses . 1. Trial of the Detectives

The Trial of the Detectives also known as the Turf Fraud Scandal was a police corruption scandal involving three senior officers at Scotland Yard in 1877. Scotland Yard had been called in to investigate a confidence trick in which two Englishmen, Harry Benson and William Kurr, had taken 30,000 from a Parisian woman named Madame de Goncourt using a scam involving horse racing bets. The arrest of Benson and Kurr proved particularly difficult, as they always seemed one step ahead of the pursuing officers. It was later revealed that Inspector John Meiklejohn had been accepting bribes from Kurr to warn him when his arrest was imminent. Two other individuals involved in the investigation, Chief Inspector Nathaniel Druscovich and Chief Inspector Palmer, were also implicated in this corruption. The three stood trial at the Old Bailey and were sentenced to two years in prison. The incident had implications for the organisation of Scotland Yard, as the Superintendent s ability to supervise his subordinates was called into question. Following the Committee of Inquiry, the Detective Branch was reorganised into the Criminal Investigation Department CID . 1. Secret trial

unreferenced date May 2008 A secret trial is a trial law trial that is not public trial open to the public , nor generally reported in the news, especially any in trial proceedings. Generally no official record of the case or the judge s verdict is made available. Often there is no indictment . The accused is usually not able to obtain the counsel of an Lawyer attorney or confront witnesses for the prosecution , and the proceedings are characterized by a perceived miscarriage of justice to the benefit of the ruling powers of the society . In the English speaking world, one of the most notorious secret courts was the Star Chamber as it was used under Charles I of England Charles I in the early 17th century. The abuses of the Star Chamber were one of the rallying points of the opposition that organized around Oliver Cromwell , and ultimately resulted in the Execution legal execution of the deposed king. The term star chamber became a generalized term for a court that was accountable to no one except the chief executive and was used to suppress political dissent or eliminate the enemies of the regime. Secret trials have been a characteristic of almost every dictatorship of the modern era , but even in democratic regimes secret trials have taken place, usually cited by state authorities as necessary for the same reason as those in dictatorships national security. Although the Great Purges in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin are best remembered for the Moscow Trials , show trial s in which the court became a parody of justice, most of the victims of the Terror were tried in secret. Mikhail Tukhachevsky and his fellow Red Army officers were tried in secret by a military tribunal , and their executions were announced only after the fact. The presiding judge of the Moscow Trials, Vasili Ulrikh , also presided over large numbers of secret trials lasting only a few minutes, in which he would quickly speak his way through a pre formulated charge and verdict.
