  1. Pro-Nicene Theology

The characterization, Pro Nicene, points to one of the central tenets of the new approach to fourth century Trinity Trinitarian theology advocated by Lewis Ayres and Michel Ren Barnes , among others. The designation, pro Nicene, classifies and describes Trinitarian theological accounts of the mid to late 4th century ca. 360s to 380s that supported the propositions in the Nicene Creed Creed of Nicaea . ref L. Ayres, Nicaea and its Legacy An Approach to Fourth Century Trinitarian Theology Oxford Oxford University Press, 2004 , 6. Later, Ayres provides the standard by which he determines whether a theology supports Nicaea, when he states that pro Nicene theologies are primarily those recognized as orthodox by the Council of Constantinople 381 and by subsequent imperial decrees p. 239 . ref Some scholars prefer to utilize a middle category, or stage in theological development, that provides further differentiation between Nicene theologies and pro Nicene theologies Barnes labels this middle category neo Nicene theology. ref E.g. , M.R. Barnes, The Power of God Dunamis in Gregory of Nyssa s Trinitarian Theology Washington, D.C. Catholic University of America Press, 2001 , 169 70. ref Nevertheless, all the scholars who utilize the pro Nicene category stress the logical compatibility that exists within different theologies of the period, rather than one particular theology. The feature of these like minded theological accounts that has garnered the most attention is the understanding that in sharing the one power of God, the Father and Son must share the same nature. ref Barnes, Power of God , 170 Ayres, Nicaea and its Legacy , 344 63 on Gregory of Nyssa. ref This new approach contrasts itself with narratives that describe the orthodox Trinitarian theologies of this period as utilizing different arguments of logic. For instance, this new approach would disagree with the contention that some orthodox accounts start from the affirmation of distinction within the Godhead Chr ...   more details

  1. Servetism

Orphan date February 2009 Portal Christianity Servetism refers to the theology of Michael Servetus , which affirms that Christ was God manifested in the flesh, yet not as part of a trinity tri personal God , and that he did not exist previously as the Son, but as the divine Logos the manifestation of God, or the Word of God that became the Son after incarnation. Servetus believed strongly in the unity of God and in the Divinity of Christ, but denied that the doctrine of the trinity of persons was the way to support these two essentials of Christian doctrine. He looked to the study of the Bible for answers, and he did not find the traditional Trinitarianism Trinitarian doctrine affirmed there. Rather than seeing a traditional Trinitarian view reflected in the Bible, he saw confirmation of the idea that God manifested Himself in the human form of Jesus Christ. In the preamble to his book, Christianismi Restitutio 1553 , he says, There is nothing greater, reader, than to recognize that God has been manifested as substance, and that His divine nature has been truly communicated to mankind. It is in Christ alone that we shall fully apprehend the manifestation of God Himself through the Word, and His communication to mankind through the spirit. Although he was a pioneer in this unique view of God he is often lumped in with Unitarianism Unitarian or Arianism Arian theology. The icon created great devotion, and in 1689, the Duke of Medinaceli erected a chapel for the statue. In 1710, a lay fraternity was founded called the Congregation of Slaves of Jes s Nazareno . In 1890, when the convent of the Capuchins was being dismantled, the mother of the Duke of Mendinaceli, Do a Casilda Salabert y Arteaga, decided to erect a church. From then, the fraternity takes the title of Cristo de Medinaceli . In 1928, the group was elevaded to a primary archconfraternity by the Pope Pius XI .
