A triumphal march is a musical form generally reflecting a triumph, victory or great joy. See march music . Many composers have written a triumphal march, with maybe the best known one being by Italian opera composer, Giuseppe Verdi for his 1871 grand opera , Aida , where, in the second act, Radames leads the Egyptian army on its return following their victory over the Ethiopians. The triumphal scene gives directors the opportunity for elaborate spectacle typical of the grand opera of the period in the nineteenth century. Among other composers who have composed triumphal marches are Ludwig van Beethoven , Edvard Greig and Alfred Hollins . Alexander Glazunov s is known as the Triumphal March on the Occasion of the Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago, 1893 . The graduation song often played in the Philippines during graduation ceremonies is a version of Verdi s Triumphal march. Image RomaArcoGianoCostantino1.JPG thumb 250px The Arch of Janus was not dedicated to the Roman god, and is the only triumphalarch with four front sides. commons Arco di Giano The Arch of Janus is the only quadrifrons triumphalarch preserved in Rome , across a crossroads in the Velabrum Forum Boarium . It was built in the early 4th century of spolia , possibly in honour of Constantine I or Constantius II . Its current name is probably from the Renaissance or later and is not ancient. The name is derived from its four fronted, four arched structure. In the Middle Ages , the Frangipane family transformed the building into a fortress and so it survived intact up until 1830. Then the attic and top were torn down because they were erroneously believed not to belong to the original structure. Fragments of the dedicatory inscription are still preserved inside the nearby church of San Giorgio al Velabro . Ancient Roman monuments name Arch of the Sergii label name Pula image name Pola Porta Aurea 1900.jpg tekst1 label x 0.47 label y 0.38 location Pula , Croatia date circa 29 BC 27 BC builder The Sergii family type TriumphalarchArch of the Sergii is an Ancient Roman triumphalarch located in Pula, Croatia Pula , Croatia . The arch commemorates three brothers of the Sergia gens Sergii family , specifically Lucius Sergius Lepidus, a tribune serving in the twenty ninth Roman legion legion that participated in the Battle of Actium and disbanded in 27 BC . This suggests an approximate date of construction 29 27 BC. The arch stood behind the original naval gate of the early Roman colony . The Sergii were a powerful family of officials in the colony and retained their power for centuries. The honorary triumphalarch , originally a city gate, was erected as a symbol of the victory at Actium. It was paid for by the wife of Lepidus, Salvia Postuma Sergia, sister of the three brothers. Both of their names are carved in the stone along with Lucius Sergius and Gaius Sergius, the honoree s father and uncle respectively. In its original form, statues of the two elders flanked Lepidus on both sides on the top of the arch. On either side of the inscription, a frieze depicts cupid s, garland s and bucranium bucrania This small arch with pairs of crenelated Corinthian order Corinthian columns and winged victories in the spandrel s, was built on the facade of a gate Porta Aurea in the walls, so the part, visible from the town side, was decorated. The decoration is late hellenistic , with major oriental influences. The low relief on the frieze represents a scene with a war chariot drawn by horses. This arch has attracted the attention of many artists, even Michelangelo . Image Slavoluk Sergijevaca 2 .jpg left thumb 200px Detail from Arch of the Sergii References Turner, J. The Arch of Tiberius Arcus Tiberi was built 16 CE in the Forum Romanum to celebrate the recovery of the eagle standard s that had been lost to Germanic tribes by Publius Quinctilius Varus Varus in 9 CE. The Roman general Germanicus had recovered the standards in 15 or 16 CE. ref Michael Grant author Grant, Michael 1970 , The Roman Forum , London Weidenfeld and Nicholson Photos by Werner Forman , pg 212. ref The Arch spanned the Vicus Jugarius between the Temple of Saturn and the Basilica Julia . It was dedicated to the emperor Tiberius because in the Imperial period only the emperor could celebrate a Roman triumph Triumph , so the victory of Germanicus was celebrated as a triumph of Tiberius. Very little is known about this monument. It is mentioned in literary sources, and it is known from a relief on the Arch of Constantine . It appears to have been a single arch, like the later Arch of Titus , flanked by two columns of the Corinthian order .
