The turf structure was sub rectangular and contained a hearth surrounded by some paving. Pottery dating to no later than the 16th century was recovered from the interior. The enclosure was also constructed of turf. The full plan of the turf building was exposed during excavation. Due to the construction materials and nature of the building it had been greatly affected by soil processes from the time it went out of use to the present. Preservation was found to vary with the south end showing the best. Extensive slumping had occurred, and this combined with subsequent decay, made excavation difficult. The presence of charcoal and charred cereal grains within the walls suggested that material from earlier occupation may have been incorporated and the remains may have represented more than one structural phase. On the interior of the building the level of the floor was indicated by the hearth and some slabs. Elsewhere, the floor was likely to have been of beaten earth, which is no longer recognisable due to the mixing of soil. The Singapore Turf Club was founded in 1842 as the Singapore Sporting Club to operate the Serangoon Road Race Course at Farrer Park . It is today the only horse racing club in Singapore and is part of the Malayan Racing Association, which also regulates the three Turf Clubs in Malaysia , the Selangor Turf Club , Penang Turf Club and Perak Turf Club The Singapore Turf Club is the only authorised operator of horse racing , and totalisator horse betting services in Singapore. It is the agent and proprietary club of the Tote Board, Singapore, who manages and directs its donation of surplus funds for charitable purposes. The first race was held on 23 February 1843 when prizemoney on offer was only 150. In 1924, the Club changed its name to the Singapore Turf Club. This was done to reflect its role as a horse racing club more accurately. The Club moved to Bukit Timah in 1933 before relocating to its present location at the Singapore Racecourse at Kranji in 1999. The racecourse is adjacent to Kranji MRT Station . Racing is staged all year round on either Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, or Wednesdays. Unreferenced date June 2008 The Sydney Turf Club STC was founded in 1943 and is the youngest of Australia s Principal Race Clubs. It was formed following an Act of Parliament Act passed by the New South Wales parliament called the Sydney Turf Club Act. The Act had taken 40 years to draft and gave the club the power to hold 62 race meetings a year at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse Rosehill and Canterbury Park Racecourse Canterbury tracks and empowered it to wind up other proprietary clubs that still existed in the Sydney area through a special Racing Compensation Fund. In 2011, the STC merged with the Australian Jockey Club to create the Australian Turf Club . The main race course is located at Sungai Besi , 17 km from Kuala Lumpur city centre. Horse racing The Selangor Turf Club is one of the three horse racing clubs in Malaysia. Located in the major city of Kuala Lumpur, the Selangor Turf Club hosts about 30 race days a year at the Sungei Besi Racecourse. A racing season begins from January till December. The main feature would be the Triple Crown Series, which carries a grand purse of RM2.7 million. Popularly known as Where Sprinters Meet Stayers , the Triple Crown Series is made up of three races featuring different distances like the Tunku Gold Cup race, which is set over a distance of 1,200 metres. The Selangor Gold Cup and the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor races are run over distances of 1,600 metres and 2,000 metres. The first leg starts in February while the second and third legs are held in March and June respectively. At the conclusion of the series, the one horse that captures all the three legs will be entitled to a RM500,000 special bonus and since its inception in 2003, no other horse has manage to capture the honour.
