Image Cabestany Tympan 02.jpg thumb 400px Detail of the tympanum of the parish church of Cabestany, from which the Master derived his name, showing his characteristic style The Master of Cabestany is the name given to an anonymous sculpture sculptor active in the second half of the 12th century. He was identified in the 1930s after the discovery of several pieces remarkable for their workmanship and their style chief among these was the Tympanum architecture tympanum of the church in Cabestany , from which he received his name. Subsequent research confirmed the presence of his works in the departments of France departments of Aude and the Pyr n es Orientales , as well as in northern Catalonia examples of his art have also been seen in Tuscany and in Navarre . Discovery The sculptor s work was first encountered in the 1930s with the discovery of a Romanesque sculpture Romanesque style tympanum, found during restoration work at the parish church of Cabestany. The high technical quality of the carving, combined with the originality of the theme drew the interest of scholars of Middle Ages medieval art, who began to compare the sculpture with other known works. Mural in a lunette in the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building , Washington, D.C. In architecture, a lunette French lunette, little moon is a half moon shaped space, either filled with recessed masonry or void. A lunette is formed when a horizontal cornice architecture cornice transects a round headed arch at the level of the imposts, where the arch springs. If a door is set within a round headed arch, the space within the arch above the door, masonry or glass, is a lunette. If the door is a major access, and the lunette above is massive and deeply set, it may be called a Tympanum architecture tympanum . The term is usefully employed to describe the section of interior wall between the curves of a vault and its springing line. A system of intersecting vaults produces lunettes on the wall surfaces above a cornice. The lunettes in the structure of the Sistine Chapel inspired Michelangelo to come up with inventive compositions for the spaces. In neoclassicism neoclassical architecture of Robert Adam and his French contemporaries, like Ange Jacques Gabriel , a favorite scheme set a series of windows within shallow blind arches. The lunettes above lent themselves to radiating motifs a Sunburst design sunburst of bellflower husks, radiating fluting, a low vase of flowers, etc. A lunette may also be segmental, and the arch may be an arc taken from an oval. The spaces are still lunettes. A lunette is commonly called a half moon window , when the space is used as a window.
