  1. Typographical Association

The Typographical Association was a United Kingdom British trade union . The National Typographical Association collapsed in 1848, and delegates from across Yorkshire and Lancashire met at Angel Street in Sheffield to found the Provincial Typographical Association , intended to recreate the former Northern Typographical Union and to focus on paying benefits to members on Strike action strike . The union grew gradually from 481 members at the end of 1849 to 5,300 in 1877. In that year, it merged with a related relief association and dropped Provincial from its title. Based in Manchester , the union focussed on demanding members serve a seven year apprenticeship . In 1894, it began admitting women. In the 1910s, the Association established a branch in London, but the Trades Union Congress instituted arbitration which restricted it from a fifteen mile radius of central London, the rival London Society of Compositors having rights to organise in the city. 1. National Typographical Association

Image Sheffield Typographical Society Reform Act.jpg thumb right Poster produced by the Sheffield Typographical Association, a constituent society of the Northern Typographical Union, in support of the Reform Act 1832 . The National Typographical Association was an early United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland British trade union , operating on a national basis. The union was founded in 1830 as the Northern Typographical Union , a federation of small, local societies in England and the Isle of Man , including the well established Manchester Typographical Society . Led by John Backhouse, the Association aimed to co ordinate the activities of its member organisations. By 1840, the union had 44 member societies, representing more than 1,000 members. During the early 1840s, the union began organising typographer s in southern towns, but suffered setbacks due to a recession . As a result, it reconstituted itself as the National Typographical Association in 1844. By 1846, the organisation had 74 branches and 5,418 members. The London Union of Compositors had reconstituted itself as the South East Region, and the General Typographical Association of Scotland as the Northern Region. However, the organisation had insufficient income to cover disputes, and following a major strike in Edinburgh during 1848, it was forced to dissolve. The Association s South East Region re established itself as the London Society of Compositors , while several societies in the north of England formed the Provincial Typographical Association . It was not until 1853 that the surviving Scottish societies formed the Scottish Typographical Association . References Arthur Marsh, Victoria Ryan and John B. The following year, it was joined by the News Society of Compositors . In 1845, the union was officially dissolved, its members designating it the South Eastern District of the National Typographical Association . The national organisation collapsed, and the London group re established itself as the London Society of Compositors The union had a membership of over 10,000 by 1910, and attempted to expand outside London, but the Trades Union Congress instituted arbitration which limited it to a fifteen mile radius of central London, the Typographical Association having rights to organise in the remainder of England. 1. Typographical Number Theory

inappropriate person article we inappropriately date August 2011 Typographical Number Theory TNT is a formal axiom atic system describing the natural numbers that appears in Douglas Hofstadter s book G del, Escher, Bach . It is an implementation of Peano arithmetic that Hofstadter uses to help explain G del s incompleteness theorems . Like any system implementing the Peano axioms, TNT is capable of referring to itself it is self referential . Numerals TNT does not use a distinct symbol for each natural number . Instead it makes use of a simple, uniform way of giving a compound symbol to each natural number zero align right 0 one align right S0 two align right SS0 three align right SSS0 four align right SSSS0 five align right SSSSS0 The symbol S can be interpreted as the successor of , or the number after . Since this is, however, a number theory, such interpretations are useful, but not strict. We cannot say that because four is the successor of three that four is SSSS0 , but rather that since three is the successor of two, which is the successor of one, which is the successor of zero, which we have described as 0 , four can be proved to be SSSS0 . TNT is designed such that everything must be proven before it can be said to be true. This is its true power, and to undermine it would be to undermine its very usefulness. Variables In order to refer to unspecified terms, TNT makes use of five Variable mathematics variables . These are a, b, c, d, e. More variables can be constructed by adding the prime symbol prime symbol after them for example, a nowiki nowiki , b nowiki nowiki , c nowiki nowiki , a nowiki nowiki , a nowiki nowiki are all variables. 1. Typographical conventions in mathematical formulae

Globalize date May 2009 discuss Talk Typographical conventions in mathematical formulae Globalize Typographical conventions in mathematical formulae provide uniformity across mathematical texts and help the readers of those texts to grasp new concepts quickly. Mathematical notation includes letters from various alphabets, as well as special mathematical symbols. Letters in various font s often have specific, fixed meanings in particular areas of mathematics. A mathematical article or a theorem typically starts from the definitions of the introduced symbols, such as Let G V ,  E be a graph mathematics graph with the vertex set V and edge set E ... . Theoretically it is admissible to write Let X a , q be a graph with the vertex set a and edge set q ... however, this would decrease readability, since the reader has to consciously memorize these unusual notations in a limited context. Usage of subscript s and superscript s is also an important convention. In the early days of computers with limited graphical capabilities for text, sub and superscripts were represented with the help of additional notation. In particular, n sup 2 sup could be written as n 2 or n 2 the latter borrowed from FORTRAN and n sub 2 sub could be written as n 2. General rules in American mathematical typography The rules of mathematical typography differ from country to country thus, American mathematical journal s and books will tend to use slightly different conventions from those of European journals. One advantage of mathematical notation is its modularity &mdash it is possible to write extremely complicated formulae involving multiple levels of super or subscripting, and multiple levels of fraction bars. However, it is considered poor style to set up a formula in such a way as to leave more than a certain number of levels for example, in non math publications Note the use of matrix environment ... pages 337 372 accessdate 2010 04 15 refend DEFAULTSORT Typographical Conventions In Mathematical Formulae ...   more details

  1. Error code

In Programming language computer programming , error codes are enumerated messages that correspond to faults in a specific software application . They are typically used to identify faulty hardware , software , or incorrect user input in programming languages that lack exception handling , although they are sometimes also used in conjunction with exception handling. Error codes are not to be confused with return code s , although both are commonly used together in error handling. Some of the most severe error codes visible to users are the Stop error screen Blue Screen of Death codes provided by the Microsoft Windows Microsoft Windows operating systems . Error codes and exception handling Error codes are slowly disappearing from the programmer s environment as modern Object oriented programming object oriented programming languages replace them with Exception handling exceptions . Exceptions .... While it is considered poor practice in methodologies that use error codes and return codes to indicate failure, programmers often neglect to check return values for error conditions. That negligence can cause undesirable effects, as ignored error conditions often cause more severe problems later in the program. Exceptions are implemented in such a way as to separate the error handling code from the rest of the code. Separating the error handling code from the normal logic makes programs easier to write and understand, since one block of error handling code can service errors from any number of function calls. 1. Discretization error

In numerical analysis , computational physics , and simulation , discretization error or truncation error is error resulting from the fact that a function mathematics function of a continuum set theory continuous variable is represented in the computer by a finite number of evaluations, for example, on a lattice model physics lattice . Discretization error can usually be reduced by using a more finely spaced lattice, with an increased Computational complexity theory computational cost . Examples Discretization error is the principal source of error in methods of finite difference s and the pseudo spectral method of computational physics. When we define the derivative of math , f x math as math f x lim h rightarrow0 frac f x h f x h math or math f x approx frac f x h f x h math , where math , h math is a finitely small number, the difference between the first formula and this approximation is known as discretization error. Related phenomena In signal processing , the analog of discretization is Sampling signal processing sampling , and results in no loss if the conditions of the sampling theorem are satisfied, otherwise the resulting error is called aliasing . Discretization error, which arises from finite resolution in the domain, should not be confused with quantization error , which is finite resolution in the range values , nor in round off error arising from floating point arithmetic. Discretization error would occur even if it were possible to represent the values exactly and use exact arithmetic it is the error from representing a function by its values at a discrete set of points, not an error in these values ref cite book first Nicholas last Higham title Accuracy and Stability of Numerical Algorithms 2 ed publisher SIAM year 2002 pages 5 ref . 1. Probability of error

Unreferenced date December 2009 In statistics , the term error arises in two ways. Firstly, it arises in the context of decision making , where the probability of error may be considered as being the probability of making a wrong decision and which would have a different value for each type of error. Secondly, it arises in the context of statistical modelling for example regression where the model s predicted value may be in error regarding the observed outcome and where the term probability of error may refer to the probabilities of various amounts of error occurring. Hypothesis testing In hypothesis testing in statistics , two types of error are distinguished. Type I and type II errors Type I error s which consist of rejecting a null hypothesis that is true this amounts to a false positive result. Type I and type II errors Type II error s which consist of failing to reject a null hypothesis that is false this amounts to a false negative result. The probability of error is similarly distinguished. For a Type I error, it is shown as alpha and is known as the size of the test and is 1 minus the Specificity tests specificity of the test. It should also be noted that alpha is sometimes referred to as the confidence of the test, or the level of significance LOS of the test. For a Type II error, it is shown as beta and is 1 minus the Statistical power power or 1 minus the sensitivity tests sensitivity of the test. Statistical and econometric modelling The fitting of many statistical model models in statistics and econometrics usually seeks to minimise the difference between observed and predicted or theoretical values. This difference is known as an error , though when observed it would be better described as a Errors and residuals in statistics residual . The error is taken to be a random variable and as such has a probability distribution . Thus distribution can be used ... The symbols are bits and the blocks are bytes, ten bits in asynchronous transmission and eight in synchronous. A framing error in an asynchronous stream usually recovers quickly, but a framing error in a synchronous stream produces gibberish at the end of the packet. Framing errors can be detected with parity bit s. 1. Random error

Random errors are error s in measurement that lead to measurable values being inconsistent when repeated measures of a time invariant constant attribute or physical quantity quantity are taken. The word random indicates that they are inherently predictability unpredictable , and have null expected value , namely, they are scattered about the true value, and tend to have null arithmetic mean when a measurement is repeated several times with the same instrument. All measurements are prone to random error. Random error is caused by unpredictable fluctuations in the readings of a measurement apparatus, or in the experimenter s interpretation of the instrumental reading these fluctuations may be in part due to interference of the environment with the measurement process. The concept of random error is closely related to the concept of accuracy and precision precision . The higher the precision of a measurement instrument, the smaller the variability standard deviation of the fluctuations in its readings.
