The Raleigh Times was the afternoon newspaper in Raleigh, North Carolina . The history of the paper dates back to 1879 the Evening Visitor , first published in 1879. The Visitor later bought out other rival afternoon papers, the Daily Press in 1895 and the Evening Times in 1897. In the midst of and after the acquisitions, the paper was variously known as the Press Visitor and the Times Visitor before eventually settling on the Raleigh Times by 1901 following purchase by John C. Drewry, who later moved the flegling paper to its longtime home at 14 East Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh. After the paper initially went bankrupt and suspended publication in 1910, it was sold to John A. Park who had reportedly made the purchase by depleting the city s gold supply. Under Park s leadership, the revamped Raleigh Times resumed production in 1912 and became the main rival of the much larger The News & Observer News & Observer . Unlike other newspaper editors, Park abstained from editorials and instead entertained readers with stories of his world travels. Famous alumni include legendary U.S. Senator Jesse Helms who was city editor for two brief stints Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. who was a reporter and is now publisher of the New York Times Nell Battle Lewis, the longtime N&O columnist who briefly served as associate editor and Bette Elliott, whose work as the women s editor led to her long running role as host of WRAL TV s Femme Fare . Eventually, the N&O purchased the Times in 1955 but continued to publish the paper until the national decline of afternoon newspapers led the N&O to cease production. The final edition of the Raleigh Times was published on November 30, 1989. The former downtown headquarters of The Times has been converted into a bar and restaurant that utilizes a theme inspired by the defunct paper. ref Sheehan, Ruth 2008 08 18 . http www.newsobserver.com 138 story ... Image Raleigh Tavern.jpg thumb right center The Raleigh Tavern in present day Colonial Williamsburg. center Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia , gained some fame in the pre American Revolutionary War Virginia Colony Colony of Virginia as a gathering place for the Burgesses after several Royal Governors officially dissolved the House of Burgesses , the elected legislative body, when their actions did not suit the Crown. Such dissension became more common between the end of the French and Indian War in 1763 and the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1776 . In 1769, the Raleigh Tavern began its career as a center of sedition when the Burgesses, dissolved because of resolutions against the British Revenue Act , convened in the Apollo Room as the late representatives of the people and adopted the Non Importation Agreement. This room was the frequent rendezvous of Jefferson, Henry, and other Revolutionary patriots. They met here in 1773 to develop intercolonial committees of correspondence. Dissolved by Dunmore, the Burgesses met again in the Apollo Room in May 1774. The tavern was an institution. Auctions as well as balls were held under the Raleigh s aegis. The Marquis de Lafayette was entertained at a banquet here in 1824, and the building remained in continual use as a tavern until it burned, at the hands of an arsonist, in 1859. In modern times, the reconstructed Raleigh Tavern, rebuilt in 1932, is one of the more modest but popular attractions of Colonial Williamsburg , a living history museum depicting life in Virginia s colonial capital city. The Raleigh Boychoir was founded in 1968 by Thomas E. Sibley. It was created to give boys aged 8 15 years an opportunity to learn and perform choral music . Sibley founded the choir because of his concern about the lack of choral experiences and performance opportunities for boys whose voices had not changed. He also believed in developing the etiquette of young boys. Thus, in October 1968, the Raleigh Boychoir was established with 20 boys and 50 contributed by the Raleigh Woman s Club. The newly formed boychoir offered a public concert during their first Christmas season in 1968. That was the first Carols of Christmas concert which is now a Yuletide tradition for many in the capital area. Though the Raleigh Boychoir operates with a limited staff and financial resources, it has grown to include an elected Board of Directors, parent committees, and an annual membership of more than 80 boys, who are recruited three times annually for the Training Choir where boys learn the fundamentals of singing and proper etiquette. Upon successful completion, which takes about a year, they move to the Resident Choir, then to the Performing Choirs, and sometimes into the select Millennium Choir. Singer Clay Aiken is an alumnus. Annual Performance Schedule The performance schedule has expanded from a single Christmas concert in 1968 to 15 20 engagements annually.
