    USS Ranger may refer to USS Ranger 1777 was an 18 gun ship sloop built in 1777 and commanded by John Paul Jones. She was captured by the British in 1780 and renamed HMS Halifax . USS Ranger 1814 was a schooner mounting a single 18 pounder gun, purchased in 1814 and sold in 1816. USS Ranger Ontario Ranger was a 14 gun brig also purchased in 1814 for operations on Lake Ontario, and sold in 1821. USS Ranger 1876 was an iron vessel mounting four guns, commissioned in 1876, converted to a nautical school ship in 1908, and broken up in 1940. USS Ranger SP 237 , was a steel yacht commissioned in 1917 and decommissioned in 1919, subsequently serving in the Department of Commerce from 1919 to 1930 before being returned to the Navy and sold in 1931. It was this force that contested British efforts to establish sea communications with their forces in Philadelphia in the fall of 1777. After several months of fighting against heavy odds, the American ships attempted to run past Philadelphia. Dolphin was purchased in February 1777 at Dover , England, and outfitted for use in the Continental Navy at Nantes , France. She was placed under the command of Lieutenant Samuel Nicholson and sailed from St. Auzeau , France on 28 May 1777 with USS Reprisal 1776 2 and USS Lexington 1776 2 , in a squadron commanded by Captain Lambert Wickes in Reprisal . During a cruise off Ireland this squadron captured and sent into port eight prizes, sank seven, and released three, throwing British shipping circles into an uproar. A 74 gun British warship gave chase to the squadron and Reprisal drew him off to enable the other ships to reach port safely. Dolphin arrived at Saint Malo , France, 27 June 1777 where she was repaired and converted into a packet ship. On 19 September she put into the Loire River Loire for further repairs. Owing to diplomatic protests by the British that American vessels should not be allowed to use neutral ports to prey upon British shipping, Dolphin was seized by the British. However, while being outfitted prior to her first sailing, the British approached and the Americans set her afire in order to prevent her capture. Ordered by Act of the Second Congress Congress was a sailing frigate built by Lancaster Burling at Poughkeepsie city , New York Poughkeepsie, New York , under authority of an act of the Second Continental Congress , dated 13 December 1775. One of the first 13 ships authorized to be built by the new government, she was placed under the command of Captain Grenell in the summer of 1776. Burned to prevent capture Before her outfitting was completed, the British occupied the approaches to the Hudson River and extended their control of the environs throughout 1777. The infant Continental Navy suffered the destruction of Congress in October 1777 to prevent her seizure by the enemy. Revenge was purchased at Dunkirk, France , for Continental service in the spring or summer of 1777 by William Hodge , an agent of the American commissioners to France , Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane . The British Ambassador to Paris complained that the ship had been fitted in a French and supposedly neutral port but Hodge circumvented the diplomatic objection by a feigned sale of the cutter to an English subject, Richard Allen. Revenge departed Dunkirk, on 17 July 1777, ostensibly for Bergen, Norway but, as soon as she was at sea, Captain Gustavus Conyngham , the Dunkirk Pirate who had recently preyed upon British shipping in Surprise 1777 Surprise , took command hoisted Continental colors and headed for the North Sea . Four days later Revenge captured a large schooner , the Happy Return and, on the 23rd, made a prize of the brig Maria . She was condemned as being unfit for repairs or further service, and was sold 15 May 1821.
