  1. Phototendering

Phototendering is the process by which organic fibres and textiles lose strength and flexibility as a result of exposure to sunlight. It is the ultraviolet component of the sun s spectrum which affects fibres, causing chain Chemical decomposition degradation and hence loss of strength. The rate of deterioration is also affected by pigments and dyes present in the textiles. Pigments themselves can also be affected, generally fading after exposure. Great care is needed to preserve museum artefacts from the harmful effects of UV light, which can also be present in fluorescent lamps . Many synthetic polymers are also degraded by UV light, and UV stabilisers are usually added to many thermoplastics . Phytoene and phytofluene were initially discovered as a potent and stable substitutes to pigmented carotenoids to protect the skin via mostly topical application . The colorless carotenoids may be beneficial for health protection and nutrition al and beauty applications such as protection against UV and oxidative damage . 1. Optical radiation

Optical radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum . It is subdivided into ultraviolet radiation UV , the spectrum of light visible for man VIS and infrared radiation IR . It ranges between wavelengths of 100 nm to 1 mm. Effects Optical radiation may produce positive as well as negative effects. It is therefore necessary to arrange for reasonable exposure to optical radiation. Primarily UV radiation, but also IR radiation, may be both beneficial and detrimental for man. The natural source of both types of radiation is sun. Artificial sources of UV radiation are among others UV lamps or emitters as for example in solaria. Artificial IR radiation is generated by devices such as light bulbs or radiant heaters. Excessive exposure to natural or artificial UV radiation means immediate acute and long term chronic damage to the eye and skin. Excess of IR radiation may also cause health detriment. Recent studies have shown that chronic exposure to IR radiation alone or combined with UV radiation may induce skin damage. It is therefore necessary to arrange for reasonable exposure to optical radiation. Specifications The European Union EU has laid down minimum harmonized requirements for the protection of workers against the risks arising from exposure to Artificial Optical Radiation e.g. UVA, laser, etc. in the Directive http eur lex.europa.eu smartapi cgi sga doc?smartapi celexplus prod DocNumber&lg en&type doc Directive&an doc 2006&nu doc 25 2006 25 EC . 1. Excinuclease

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Excision endonuclease , also known as excinuclease or UV Specific Endonuclease , is a nuclease enzyme which excises a fragment of nucleotides during DNA repair . The excinuclease cuts out a fragment by hydrolyzing two phosphodiester bonds, one on either side of the lesion in the DNA. This process is part of nucleotide excision repair , a mechanism that can fix specific damages to the DNA in the G1 phase of the eukaryotic cell cycle . Such damages can include the thymine dimers created by UV rays. A deficiency of excinuclease occurs in a rare autosomal recessive disease called xeroderma pigmentosum . Diagnosis of this disease is done by measuring the enzyme s level in white blood cells in a blood sample. Symptoms in children include extreme ultraviolet UV sensitivity, excessive freckle freckling , multiple skin cancer s and corneal ulcer ations. Typically, these symptoms are seen during a child s first sun exposure. Citation needed date November 2009 Category DNA repair Enzyme stub ca escinucleasa es escinucleasa ...   more details
