Disputed date March 2008 RKO Records and Unique Jazz are two record label s. They began in 1955 as UniqueRecords, a New York pop music record label. After several small pop hits, such as Man in the Raincoat by fourteen year old Priscilla Wright, the label was acquired by RKO General in 1957, who had recently acquired the venerable RKO Movie Studio. In an effort to create entertainment synergy, RKO also acquired the struggling Mutual Radio Network in an attempt to enhance the record company by creating a national audience for the product. Unfortunately, the concept behind the arrangement was that rock and roll music was a passing fad, and that the pop music of the 1920s through the early 1950s would endure. With that in mind, RKO signed former record superstars like Rudy Vallee , the Harmonicats and Ted Lewis musician Ted Lewis in hopes of recapturing their glorious past. To this mix they added popular movie stars like Herb Jeffries , Edie Adams and Frances Langford , former vaudeville stars and RKO movie regulars like the Vagabonds vaudeville Vagabonds , plus current popular TV stars such as George DeWitt , then the host of the top rated Name That Tune . Unique Art Manufacturing Company was an United States American toy company, founded in 1916, based in Newark, New Jersey that made inexpensive toys, including wind up mechanical toys, out of lithography lithographed tin . One of its early products was a wind up toy featuring two tin boxing boxers . The company scored a hit in the 1940s when it acquired the rights to a popular comic strip and released the Li l Abner Dogpatch Band for Christmas 1945. The windup toy featured Abner dancing , Pappy on Drum kit drums , Mammy with a drum stick, and Daisy Mae playing piano . Unique followed with a Howdy Doody band several years later. Unique s president, Sammy Bergman, was a good friend of toy magnate Louis Marx and Company Louis Marx , and the two men s companies at times cooperated, with Marx providing tooling to Unique and sometimes acting as a distributor for Unique s products. In 1949, Unique began producing lithographed tin O gauge toy train s, using tooling of its own design along with some recycled tooling from the defunct Dorfan Company. Unique sold its trains in inexpensive boxed sets like Marx, and also produced a circus set that was distributed on a car by car basis by the Jewel Tea Company Jewel Companies . Marx saw this as a betrayal and responded with a new line similar in size to Unique s, but with lithography that looked more realistic. Unique found itself unable to compete, and withdrew its trains from the marketplace by 1951. Although Unique was unable to capture much of a piece of the toy train craze of the early 1950s, a tin typewriter toy introduced during the same time frame did take market share away from Marx, who had a similar toy. The customization generally consists of Car audio car stereo , wheels, custom paint and interior work.
