  1. Unisys DMSII

Refimprove date May 2010 The Unisys Data Management System II DMSII is a database management system database system originally created by the Burroughs Corporation in 1972. It was available on the Burroughs later Unisys Small B1000 , Medium 4000, V Series and Large System 5000, 6000, 7000 product lines. The later, A Series, Clearpath, Libra product lines support it and in recent releases of Burroughs large systems Unisys Clearpath software it has been renamed as the Enterprise Database Server for ClearPath MCP ref http www9.unisys.com products mainframes mcp mainframes index.htm Current mainframe sales mentioning Java development for DMS II ref . It originally competed with IBM s Information Management System IMS and CICS products and predated the popularity of relational databases. History DMSII provided an ISAM indexed sequential access method model for data access, transaction isolation and database recovery capabilities. The database schema was written in the proprietary Data and Structure Definition Language DASDL . The DASDL source code was compiled with a system utility into a file containing the metadata for the database known as the description file . A database utility program would use the database description file to create the remaining components of the database. Proprietary language compilers such as COBOL and ALGOL would use the database description file to create database related elements in the object code of the compiled program. These compilers used language extensions to provide a more natural interface to the database by the programmer. A number of intrinsic functions were inserted by the compiler to ensure the program and database used the same definition of database structures. Originally, DMSII maintained a data dictionary that the application programmer referenced in its source code. The source for the data structures was maintained in an ordinary ..., it performed poorly. See also LINC 4GL Notes references DEFAULTSORT Unisys Dmsii Category Proprietary ...   more details

Infobox Court Case name Johnson v Unisys Ltd court House of Lords image Unisys logo.svg caption date decided full name citations 2001 http www.bailii.org uk cases UKHL 2001 13.html UKHL 13 , 2001 IRLR 279 judges prior actions subsequent actions opinions transcripts keywords Unfair dismissal, injury to feelings, compensation, contract of employment Johnson v Unisys Limited 2001 http www.bailii.org uk cases UKHL 2001 13.html UKHL 13 is a leading UK labour law case on the measure of damages for unfair dismissal and the nature of the contract of employment. Facts After twenty years of working for Unisys Ltd in Milton Keynes , in 1994 Mr Johnson was dismissed for an alleged irregularity in his work. He suffered a mental breakdown, drank heavily, was admitted to mental hospital , could not find a new job despite over 100 applications and at age 52 was unlikely to have a promising future career. He claimed that he was unfairly dismissed, and that the manner of his dismissal, which was summarily without the chance of a fair hearing and with one month s pay in lieu only, caused his health problems. He sought compensation for unfair dismissal, and in addition for the manner of dismissal given the employer s breach of mutual trust and confidence . Judgment The House of Lords held that while Mr Johnson had been dismissed unfairly there could be no compensation for the manner of Mr Johnson s dismissal if that would exceed the statutory scheme laid out in the Employment Rights Act 1996 and the accompanying limits on compensation that could be sought through the system of employment tribunals. While a common law right to full compensation for breach of contract might exist, it could not circumvent the intention of Parliament in laying down limits to compensation for dismissals. In the course of his judgment Lord Hoffmann made some important remarks on the contract of employment. ref 2001 http www.bailii.org uk cases UKHL 2001 13.html UKHL 13 , 35 ref Cquote My Lords, the first question ...   more details

  1. 3DVE

3DVE or 3D VE originally 3D Visible Enterprise, but now called the Unisys 3D Blueprinting Approach was created by Unisys to provide visibility within existing Enterprise architecture enterprise organizations into how proposed changes will affect their business operations. This is done by constructing one or more models often called blueprints within 3D VE to represent various aspects of the organization, which will allow users to perform what if type analysis to determine dependencies and side effects of various changes. These models are built using a collection of design and analysis tools, such as Rational Software , Proforma , and Cost Xpert , along with software internally developed by Unisys to interface these Commercial off the shelf COTS software packages and provide additional modeling capabilities. Within 3D VE, an organization is partitioned into a series of layers Layer 1 Executive Vision Layer 2 Business Process Layer 3 Software Applications Layer 4 Infrastructure By modeling any one of these layers, the various components of that layer can be represented, along with relationships between other components. By modeling adjacent layers, the user is then able to determine the relationships between components of different layers. Once the relationships between components has been identified, the user is able to determine what components might be affected when any components ... proprietary software components with open source components. 1. System Development Corporation

System Development Corporation SDC , based in Santa Monica, California , was considered the world s first computer software company. Fact date April 2009 SDC started in 1955 as the systems engineering group for the Semi Automatic Ground Environment SAGE air defense ground system at the RAND Corporation . RAND spun off the group in 1957 as a non profit organization that provided expertise for the United States military in the design, integration, and testing of large, complex, computer controlled systems. SDC became for profit in 1969. With that change, it began to offer its services to all comers rather than only to the American military. In 1980, SDC was sold by its board of directors to Burroughs Corporation . In 1986, Burroughs merged with the Sperry Corporation to form Unisys , and SDC was folded into Unisys Defense Systems. In 1991, Unisys Defense Systems was renamed Paramax, a wholly owned subsidiary of Unisys, so that it could be spun off to reduce Unisys debt. ref http articles.janes.com articles International Defence Review 93 PARAMAX SYSTEMS CORPORATION DIVISION OF UNISYS FREDERICK F JENNY.html ref In 1995, Unisys sold Paramax to the Loral Corporation , although a small portion of it, containing some projects that had originated in SDC, remained with Unisys. In 1996 Loral sold Paramax to Lockheed Martin . In 1997, the Paramax business unit was separated from Lockheed Martin under the control of Frank Lanza one of the original founders of Loral , and is now a subsidiary of L 3 Communications . Significant contributions In the 1960s, SDC developed the timesharing system for the Q32 AN FSQ 32 mainframe computer for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ARPA . The Q 32 was one of the first systems to support both multiple users and inter computer communications. Experiments with a dedicated modem connection to the TX 2 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT led to computer communication applications such as email. The Table Of Contents Editor TOCED is a programmer and system administrator utility for Unisys mainframe computers of the former UNIVAC 1100 2200 series . TOCED was developed during the late 1970s by Michael E. Darnell, who modeled the program interface and commands on the Univac Text Editor developed by Dr. Roger M. Firestone. The TOCED processor is used to conversationally edit the table of contents of an OS2200 program file. It allows all or portions of the table of contents to be edited, program elements to be deleted, and any elements deleted after the last PACK of the file to be recovered. TOCED will also allow read only access to the OS2200 Master File Directory MFD and the system print queues. It also allows access to the TIP file directories.
