It was constructed in 1928 and stands 18 stories tall. The building was designed by architect C. Howard Crane in the renaissance revival architectural style, and is made mainly of brick . Until December 29, 1971, it was a first run movie house and office space, and then after that, the theatre saw sporadic usage until 1973. The UnitedArtists Theatre, designed in a Spanish Gothic design, sat 2,070 people, and after closing served from 1978 to 1983 as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra s recording theater. After the theater closed, the office block struggled as tenants moved to suburbs. It finally closed in 1984. It was purchased by the Balaban and Katz cinema chain and renamed in 1927. The theatre began life showing live theatre and later exclusively showed films. It was located at the southeast corner of Randolph and Dearborn. It was later operated by ABC Great States and Cineplex Odeon . It continued operation until late 1987, and was demolished in 1989. The UnitedArtists was located on Randolph Street , which was once known as Chicago s Great White Way and continues to be the center of Chicago s theatre district. The theatre featured ornate interior design common of the movie palaces of its era. It was known for showing exclusive runs and premieres of top Hollywood films. In the 1970s, the theatre focused mostly on the action and horror films popular at the time, with the occasional blockbuster, such as the house record breaking run of Jaws film Jaws . From the 1950s until its closing, the theater featured an elaborate Marquee sign marquee , which wrapped around the building s curved corner entrance. This marquee can be seen in many films including The Blues Brothers , Adventures in Babysitting , and Ferris Bueller s Day Off . The Artists Quarter a.k.a. the AQ is a well known musician owned and operated jazz club in Minneapolis Saint Paul Twin Cities . The club opened in the early 1970s in South Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1995. The club is in the basement of the historic Hamm Building in downtown St. Paul.
