It was named after Charles and Augustus Storrs, two brothers who donated the land for the school as well as initial funding. Women began attending classes in 1891 and were officially admitted in 1893, when the name was changed to Storrs Agricultural College and it became Connecticut s Land grant college. In 1899, the name changed again to Connecticut Agricultural College in 1933, to Connecticut State College and finally in 1939, to the University of Connecticut. In 1940, the school was first divided into individual colleges and schools, reflecting its new university status. This was also the year that the School of Social Work and School of Nursing were first established. The graduate program was also started at this time, and existing schools of law and pharmacy were absorbed into the university. During the 1960s, the University of Connecticut Health Center was established in Farmington as a home for the new School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine . John Dempsey Hospital was opened in Farmington at this time and has been operated by UConn ever since. The School of Dental Medicine has seven speciality programs. The department of Periodontology has a long history of significant contributions to dentistry in general and periodontology in particular.Several path breaking studies were done at UCONN and stands tall on the shoulders of its achievements. Initially, the British pound circulated along with foreign currencies. This was supplemented by local paper money from 1709. Although the local currency was denominated in pounds, shilling s and penny pence , it was worth less than sterling, with 1 Connecticut shilling 9 pence sterling. This rated the Spanish dollar at 6 Connecticut shillings compared to 4 shillings 6 pence sterling . The first issue of notes is known as the Old Tenor issue. Due to over issue, the value of the Old Tenor notes fell relative to silver coins. In 1740, a second series of paper money was introduced, known as the New Tenor issue. These were worth 3 times as much as the same denomination of Old Tenor notes. A further issue of 1755, known as Lawful Money , replaced the Old and New Tenor issues at the rates of 1 Lawful Money shilling 2.1 New Tenor shillings 7.33 Old Tenor shillings. The State of Connecticut issued Continental currency denominated in both sd and Spanish dollars, with 1 Spanish dollar 6 shillings. The Continental currency was replaced by the U.S. dollar at the rate of 1000 Continental dollars 1 U.S. dollar.
