Use dmy dates date April 2012 The Leipzig Interim was a temporary settlement of 1548 AD in matters of religion, entered into by the Emperor Charles V with the Protestants. The Augsburg Interim of 1548 met with strong opposition. In order to make it less objectionable, a modification was introduced by Melanchthon and other Protestant theologians, commissioned by Elector Maurice of Saxony . In a meeting held at Alt Zella in November, 1548, they explained in a Protestant sense what they considered essential points of doctrine, e.g. justification theology justification and others. They accepted the non essentials or adiaphora , such as confirmation, Mass, the use of candles, vestments, holy days, etc. The document then drawn up became known as the Interim of Zella , or the Small Interim. Around 1820 there was a decorated pump handle in the form of an iron lion and designed by the Berlin sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow and cast by Lauchhammer t. It was incorporated into the lion fountain designed by the Leipzig Oberbaurat Hugo Licht . There is a Versalinschrift on the back of the fountain which reads In the last war in 1918, this fountain in the shape of the old wooden housing has been rebuilt from the rate by the architect Dr. Ing. Hugo Lucht. The funds were donated by the Hugo Haschke Company. orphan date December 2008 The Leipzig Salient lies South West of the Thiepval Memorial . A grass path leads across the fields with trenches. A clumb of trees and bushes marks the location of center of the Leipzig Redoubt, a strong point with a lot of machine guns. On July the 1st 1916 the 32nd Division attacked this place. Men of the 17 Highland Light Infantry crept forward at 7.23 a.m., even before the British barrage had ended. They advanced to within about 40 yards of the German front line, and when the barrage did lift, at 7.30 a.m. the Highlanders rushed forwards and took the Leipzig Redoubt, catching the Germans in their dugouts in the quarry at the centre of the Redoubt. They then pressed on to the next objective, but were forced back to the Leipzig Redoubt, where they consolidated with help from troops of the 2 Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Later they were joined there by men from the 11 Border Regiment and from the 1 Dorsets, but further advance from the Leipzig Redoubt proved impossible. The small advances made here, in taking the Redoubt, were the only success for the 32nd Division that day. The position was strengthened and held against several German counter attacks. German strong points The schwaben redoubt was not the only strong point the Germans made on the battlefield of the Somme.
