  1. John Milner Fothergill

Wikify date August 2011 John Milner Fothergill , M.D. 1841 1888 , was a medical writer. Fothergill, son of a surgeon, was born at Morland, Westmoreland, on 11 April 1841, studied at the university of Edinburgh, and there graduated M.D. 1865. He afterwards studied at Vienna and Berlin and began professional work as a general practitioner at Morland, whence he soon after moved to Leeds, and in 1872 came to London, was admitted a member of the College of Physicians, and endeavoured to get into practice as a physician. He obtained appointments at two small hospitals, the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Chest and the West London Hospital but when asked some years later how he throve, replied, The private patient seems to me to be an extinct animal. He worked, however, with untiring energy, and wrote The Heart and its Diseases, The Practitioner s Handbook of Treatment, The Physical Factor in Diagnosis, Vaso renal Change versus Bright s Disease. In his writings his expressions about those with whom he did not agree are violent, and he often makes positive general assertions without sufficient grounds for them but he sometimes admitted his errors, and struggled hard with numerous difficulties in life. He was a man of enormous weight, with a large head and very thick neck, and so continued till he died of diabetes, from which and from gout he had long suffered. He resided in Henrietta Street, Cavendish Square, London, and there died on 28 June 1888. A distinguished lecturer on materia medica has expressed the opinion that the most valuable of Fothergill s writings are An Essay on the Action of Digitalis, written in his early life, and The Antagonism of Therapeutic Agents, and what it teaches, published in 1878. Book 1 contained sets of extracts from earlier writers book 2 contained a technically innovative list of dates and events in tabular format. The original Koine Greek Greek text is lost, although substantial quotations exist in later chronographers. Both books are mostly preserved in an Armenian language Armenian translation. Book 2 is entirely preserved in the Latin translation by Jerome . Portions also exist in quotation in later Syriac writers such as the fragments by James of Edessa and, following him, Michael the Syrian . Contents Clarify date October 2009 The work was composed in divided into two parts. The first part Greek, Chronographia , Annals gives a summary of universal history from the sources, arranged according to nations. The second part Greek, Chronikoi kanones , Chronological Canons furnishes a synchronism of the historical material in parallel columns, the equivalent of a parallel timeline , where each line is a year. It is the longest preserved list of Ancient Olympic Games Olympic victors, containing however mainly the stadion running race winners from 776 BC to 217 AD. The work as a whole has been lost in the original, but it may be reconstructed from later chronographists of the Byzantine school who made excerpts from the work with untiring diligence, especially George Syncellus . The tables of the second part have been completely preserved in a Chronicon Jerome Latin translation by Jerome , and both parts are still extant in an Armenian translation. The loss of the Greek originals has given an Armenian translation a special importance thus, the second part of Eusebius Chronicle , of which only a few fragments exist in the Greek, has been preserved entirely in Armenia ...   more details

  1. Ludwig Babenstuber

Ludwig Babenstuber 1660 5 April 1726 was a Germany German philosopher and theologian and vice chancellor of the University of Salzburg . He was born in 1660 at Teining in Bavaria . Having completed his early studies he entered the novitiate of the Order of St. Benedict at Ettal Abbey in 1681, made his religious profession in 1682, and thereafter devoted the greater part of his life to teaching. At the commencement of his studies he had given no promise of brilliancy, but by his untiring application and industry he shortly acquired so vast a store of knowledge, that he soon came to be regarded as one of the most learned men of his day vir comsummatae in omni genere dictrinae et probitatis , as he is styled in Dom Egger s Idea ordinis Hierarchico Benedictini , and in the History of the University of Salzburg . Until 1690 Babenstuber was Director of the scholasticate of his order at Salzburg , taught philosophy there from 1690 to 1693, then went to the Augustinian Schlehdorf Abbey to teach theology in the monastery of the Canons Regular . Returning to Salzburg in 1695, he took up successively the professorships of moral theology, dogmatic theology, and exegesis, in the celebrated Benedictine university of that city. He remained at Salzburg for twenty two years, during which period he held the office of vice rector for three years, and that of vice chancellor of the university for six. In 1717 he returned to his monastery at Ettal, where he spent the remainder of his days. In dogmatic theology Babenstuber was a pronounced Thomist in moral, a vigorous defender of probabilism . He maintained, among other things, that a single author, if he were beyond contradiction omni exceptione major , could, of his own authority, render an opinion probably, even against general opinion. In matters of faith, however, he rejected the principle of probabilism absolutely. In one of his disquisitions he had also stated that it was allowable to celebrate Mass liturgy Mass privately on Maund ...   more details
