  1. Uranium metallurgy

Image U,92.jpg thumb Uranium In materials science and materials engineering , uranium metallurgy is the study of the physical and chemical behavior of uranium and its alloy s. Commercial grade uranium can be produced through the Redox reduction of uranium halide s with alkali or alkaline earth metal s. Uranium metal can also be made through electrolysis of potassium K U fluorine F sub 5 sub or UF sub 4 sub , dissolved in a molten Calcium chloride CaCl sub 2 sub and Sodium chloride NaCl . Very pure uranium can be produced through the thermal decomposition of uranium halides on a hot filament. The uranium isotope uranium 235 sup 235 sup U is used as the fuel for nuclear reactor s and nuclear weapon s. It is the only isotope existing in nature to any appreciable extent that is fissile, that is, fissionable by thermal neutrons. The isotope uranium 238 sup 238 sup U is also important because it absorbs neutrons to produce a radioactive isotope that subsequently decays to the isotope 239Pu plutonium , which also is fissile. Uranium in its natural state comprises just 0.71 sup 235 sup U and 99.3 sup 238 sup U, and the main focus of uranium metallurgy is the enriched uranium enrichment of uranium through isotope separation . It is a very toxic Chemical compound compound and should not be ingested. Uranium sulfate minerals commonly are widespread around uranium bearing mine sites, where they usually form during the evaporation of acid sulfate rich mine tailings which have been leached by oxygen bearing waters. Uranium sulfate is a transitional compound in the production of Uranium hexafluoride . It was also used to fuel aqueous Homogeneous Reactor s Preparation Uranyl sulfate in solution is readily photochemically reduced to uranium IV sulfate. The photoreduction can be carried out in the sunshine and this requires the addition of ethanol as a reducing agent. Uranium IV crystallizes or is precipitated by ethanol in excess. 1. Natural uranium

Natural uranium NU refers to refined uranium with the same isotopic ratio as found in nature. It contains 0.7 uranium 235 , 99.3 uranium 238 , and a trace of uranium 234 by weight. In terms of the amount of radioactivity , approximately 2.2 comes from uranium 235, 48.6 uranium 238, and 49.2 uranium 234. Natural uranium can be used to fuel both low and high power reactors. Historically, graphite moderated reactors and heavy water moderated reactors have been fueled with natural uranium in the pure metal U or uranium dioxide UO sub 2 sub ceramic forms, however experimental fuelings with uranium trioxide UO sub 3 sub and triuranium octaoxide , U sub 3 sub O sub 8 sub have shown promise. http www.ornl.gov webworks cppr y2001 rpt 115351.pdf The 0.72 U 235 is not sufficient to produce a self sustaining critical chain reaction in light water reactor s or nuclear weapon s these applications must use enriched uranium . In rare occasions, earlier in geologic history when U 235 was more abundant, uranium ore was found to have naturally engaged in fission, forming natural nuclear fission reactor s. During the Manhattan Project , the name Tuballoy was used to refer to natural uranium in the refined condition this term is still in occasional use at present.
