    Walter Mathias Urbain 1910 January 15, 2002 was an American physicist who helped pioneer food science innovation during World War II. His contributions include new patents and methodologies in food engineering , irradiation , and meat science . Career He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1934, then went to work for Swift & Company from 1934 to 1966 in research and development. Urbain would eventually rise to Director, Engineering Research, holding that position from 1950 to 1966. Urbain left Swift for Michigan State University in 1965 where he worked on irradiation, acting as a lead consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA in Vienna, Austria and also consulting on projects with international governments. Urbain retired in 1975 though he served as a visiting professor to the University of California, Davis and as a consultant to the IAEA. Urbain played a critical role in the American Chemical Society , the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers American Society of Agricultural Engineers 1907 2005 , and the Institute of Food Technologists , serving in all three organizations. He also earned two patents and published 36 scientific papers as well. Death Urbain died in Dallas, Texas on January 15, 2002. Biography Born to an apothecary , Domergue studied in his hometown of Aubagne , Bouches du Rh ne and later at an Oratory of Saint Philip Neri oratory college in Marseille . He became a teacher in Lyon , and married a surgeon s daughter and released the first edition of his Grammaire fran oise simplifi e Simplified French grammar in 1778. In 1784 he founded the Journal de la Langue Fran oise Journal of the French Language , which had among his objectives to fight against neologism s. After that book didn t sell well, he went to Paris and established a society of amateur French linguists. He had his Grammaire simplifi e book re edited, collaborated in the Journal g n ral du soir, de politique et de litt rature and rereleased his Journal de la Langue Fran oise book. He became grammar professor at the cole centrale des Quatre Nations, and later chaired the humanities department at the Lyc e Charlemagne in Paris. Biography Leissegues joined the Navy in 1778, at age 20. He served on the frigate Oiseau and took part in patrol in the English Channel, before being transferred on the Nymphe . In 1780, he was promoted to lieutenant de fr gate and joined the French frigate Magicienne 1778 Magicienne . In 1781, Leissegues served under Pierre Andr de Suffren de Saint Tropez Suffren and took part in the campaigns of the Franco Indian alliances . He received a wound at the head during the Battle of Providien . From 1785, Leiss gues served in the North Sea on the frigate Vigilante . Promoted to sous lieutenant de vaisseau, he served in the Indian Ocean aboard the frigate M duse from 1787 to 1791. He took his first command with the brig Furet , off Newfoundland. Leiss gues was promoted to Captain in early 1793 and put in command of a convoy bound for Windward Islands Society Islands Windward Islands . Arriving at Guadeloupe , he found the island in British hands, and launched a 4 month campaign to re take it. He was subsequently promoted to contre amiral. His promotion was not rapid. It was not till 1746 that he became lieutenant de vaisseau , which was, however, a somewhat higher rank than the lieutenant in the British navy, since it carried with it the right to command a frigate . He was promoted capitaine de vaisseau , or post captain , in May 1756. But his reputation must have been good, for he was made chevalier de Saint Louis in 1748. In that year de Guichen had fought no fewer than five battles against superior British forces, while escorting back to France, from the Antilles a huge convoy. In 1755 he participated in the abortive relief expedition to Louisbourg under Dubois de La Motte, and was involved, onboard L Heros 70 off Louisbourg. In 1775 he was appointed to the frigate Terpsichore , attached to the training squadron, in which the Louis Philippe Joseph, duc d Orl ans duc de Chartres , afterwards notorious as the duc d Orl ans and as Philippe Egalit , was entered as volunteer. In the next year he was promoted Chef d Escadre , or Rear Admiral .
