Utilitarianism Refimprove date June 2011 Act Utilitarianism is a utilitarian theory of ethics which states that, when faced with a choice, we must first consider the likely consequences of potential actions and, from that, choose to do what we believe will generate the most pleasure. ref Fieser, J. 2009 . Ethics. Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy , Retrieved from http www.iep.utm.edu ethics ref Act utilitarianism is opposed to rule utilitarianism , which states that the morally right action is the one that is in accordance with a moral rule whose general observance would create the most happiness. Act utilitarianism will use the summary concept as opposed to the practice concept. The summary concept means that the rule is a generalization that a class of actions, such as the keeping of promises, is good. Jeremy Bentham presented one of the earliest fully developed systems of utilitarianism. According to act utilitarianism, it would be morally wrong to waste time on leisure activities such as watching television, since our time could be spent in ways that produced a greater social benefit, such as charity work. But prohibiting leisure activities doesn t seem reasonable. More significantly, according to act utilitarianism, specific acts of torture or slavery would be morally permissible if the social benefit of these actions outweighed the disbenefit. ref Fieser, J. 2009 . Utilitarianism expanded Problems The utility monster is a thought experiment in the study of ethics . It was created by philosopher Robert Nozick in 1974 as a criticism of utilitarianism . In the thought experiment, a hypothetical being is proposed who receives as much or more utility from each additional unit of a resource he consumes as the first unit he consumes. In other words, the utility monster is not subject to diminishing marginal returns with regard to utility, but instead experiences constant marginal returns, or even increasing marginal returns. Since ordinary people receive less utility with each additional unit consumed, if the utility monster existed, it would justify the mistreatment and perhaps annihilation of everyone else, according to the doctrine of utilitarianism. fact date February 2012 Robert Nozick believes that Utilitarian theory is embarrassed by the possibility of utility monsters who get enormously greater sums of utility from any sacrifice of others than these others lose . . . the theory seems to require that we all be sacrificed in the monster s maw, in order to increase total utility. ref Robert Nozick, Anarchy, State, and Utopia 1974 ref This thought experiment attempts to show that utilitarianism is not actually egalitarian , even though it appears to be at first glance. Refimprove date September 2007 Proportionalism is an ethical theory that lies between consequentialism teleological or consequentialism consequential theories and deontological theories. consequentialism Teleological or consequentialism consequential theories, like utilitarianism , say that an action is right or wrong, depending on the consequences it produces, whereas deontological theories, like The Categorical Imperative , say that actions are either intrinsically right or intrinsically wrong. Proportionalist theories like rule utilitarianism , however, say it is never right to go against a principle unless a proportionate reason would justify it. 1960s Proportionalism is a consequentialist attempt to develop Natural Moral Law , a Catholic deontological Moral absolutism absolutist theory by Thomas Aquinas . The moral guidelines set down by the Roman Catholic teachings of Natural Moral Law are mostly upheld in that intrinsically evil acts are still classified so. In certain situations where there is a balance of ontic good s and ontic evil s ontic evils are those that are not immoral but merely cause pain or suffering, ontic goods are those that alieviate pain or suffering . Proportionalism asserts that one can determine the right course of action by weighing up the good and the necessary evil caused by the action. As a result, Proportionalism aims to choose the lesser of evils. Pope John Paul II rules out the 1960s Proportionalism in his encyclicals Veritatis Splendor , promulgated in 1993 cf. section 75 , and in Evangelium Vitae , 1995 cf. article 68 .
