JamVM can be configured to use the GNU Classpath or the OpenJDK Java class library and recent versions support object finalization, Soft Weak Phantom References, the Java Native Interface JNI and the Reflection API. The compacting garbage collector can run either synchronously or asynchronously within its own thread. JamVM currently supports the Central processing unit CPUs x86 64 AMD64 , ARM architecture ARM , Intel 80486 i80486 , MIPS architecture MIPS , PowerPC and SPARC . The OpenJDK compatible version of JamVM is supported by IcedTea , and IcedTea packages of JamVM are included in both Debian and Ubuntu operating system Ubuntu . Orphan date February 2009 TCPware is a third party layered product published by Process Software LLC to add TCP IP capabilities to OpenVMS . The need for such a product may seem obvious today but back in the early 1990s Digital Equipment Corporation who published VMS as it was known at the time had an internal policy favoring their own product called DECnet . Meanwhile, many VMS users in governments, large corporations and universities were discovering the TCP IP based internet and required third party software enable connectivity to it. Today, HP s TCPIP Services for OpenVMS is putting pressure on products like TCPware. One reason why TCPware hasn t faded into oblivion is due to two TCPware API s called the Telnet Library and the FTP Library . These modules allow a relatively inexperienced programmer to use a high level language to write software which will connect across the internet and do useful work. Also, quite a bit of legacy software now relies on these modules with no good reason to rewite them at the lower packet library level. Side Notes In the early 1990s Digital Equipment Corporation DEC produced their own flavor of UNIX called ULTRIX which supported TCP IP. Almost as a skunk works project, they produced a layered product for VMS called UCX Ultrix Communications Extensions which later evolved into TCPIP Services for OpenVMS . TCPware s Telnet Library can be used for other protocol transfers like HTTP and SMTP to only name two. In computer programming , an entry point is a memory address , corresponding to a point in the code of a computer program which is intended as destination of a long jump, be it internal or external. Usage customs Contemporary In most of today s popular computer systems, such as Microsoft Windows and Unix , a computer program usually only has a single entry point . In C programming language C and C programs this is the main function programming code main code function . Historical Historically, and in some contemporary legacy system s, such as OpenVMS VMS and OS 400 , computer programs have a multitude of entry point s, each corresponding to the different functionalities of the program. The usual way to denote entry points, as used system wide in VMS and in PL I and Macro computer science MACRO programs, is to append them at the end of the name of the executable image , delimited by a dollar sign i.e. code directory.exe make code . The Apple 1 computer also used this to some degree. For example an alternative entry point in Apple 1 BASIC would keep the BASIC program, useful when the reset button was accidentally pushed. VAXmate was an IBM compatible IBM PC AT compatible personal computer introduced by Digital Equipment Corporation in September, 1986. The replacement to the Rainbow 100 , in its standard form it was the first commercial diskless personal computer. OS and files The operating system and files would normally served from a VAX VMS server running the company s Pathworks VAX VMS Services for MS DOS software , which went through several name changes, finally becoming Pathworks . Alternatively an optional expansion box containing either 20  MB or 40  MB hard disk could be purchased which allowed it to operate as a more conventional stand alone PC. Original Price The basic system contained an 8  MHz Intel 80286 CPU with 1 Mbyte of RAM, a 1.2  MB RX33 5 inch floppy disk drive, a 14 inch diagonal amber or green monochrome cathode ray tube CRT and a 10BASE2 thinwire Ethernet interface all contained in the system unit. It was also provided with a parallel printer port and a serial communications port. A separate mouse and LK250 keyboard was used with the device. As well as the expansion box, an Intel 80287 80287 MHz numeric coprocessor could be ordered as an option, and the memory could be expanded by 2  MB with another option to 3  MB. In North America, an internal modem was also available. DECstation It was superseded by the DECstation 200 and 300 in January 1989. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Pathworks was the tradename used by Digital Equipment Corporation of Maynard, Massachusetts Maynard , Massachusetts for a series of programs that eased the interoperation of Digital s minicomputer s with personal computer s. The server part of Pathworks ran on VAX VMS or Ultrix and enabled a DEC VAX or VAXcluster to act as a file and print server for client IBM PC compatible and Apple Macintosh Macintosh workstations. Pathworks server was derived from LanMan X , the portable version of OS 2 LAN Manager . Once installed onto the PCs, the Pathworks client provided the following features DECnet end node connectivity with the host systems PowerTerm 525 Terminal emulation software from Ericom File transfer software For clients running a GUI such as Windows 3.x, additional components available included an X window system server, allowing clients to access graphical apps running on VMS or UNIX hosts, and clients for DEC s ALL IN 1 email and groupware system. Although primitive by modern standards, Pathworks was very sophisticated for its time far more than just a file and print server, it made client microcomputers into terminals and workstations on a DEC network. LanMan normally ran across Microsoft s basic, non routable NetBIOS NetBIOS NetBEUI NetBIOS Frames protocol NBF protocol, but Pathworks included a DECnet stack, including layers like the LAT transport used for terminal sessions. The complexity of DECnet by 1980s PC standards meant that the Pathworks client was a huge software stack to have resident in MS DOS configuring the Pathworks client was a complex task, made more so by the need to preserve enough Conventional memory for DOS applications to run. To keep a reasonable amount of base memory free mandated the use of QEMM or a similar memory manager . Pathworks was available for both Windows and Mac computer systems.
