unreferenced date May 2010 A VoIP VPN combines voice over IP and virtual private network technologies to offer a method for delivering secure voice . Because VoIP transmits digitized voice as a stream of data, the VoIP VPN solution accomplishes voice encryption quite simply, applying standard data encryption mechanisms inherently available in the collection of protocols used to implement a Virtual private network VPN . The VoIP gateway router first converts the analog voice signal to digital form, encapsulates the digitized voice within Internet Protocol IP packets, then encrypts the digitized voice using IPsec , and finally routes the encrypted voice packets securely through a VPN tunnel. At the remote site, another VoIP router decodes the voice and converts the digital voice to an analog signal for delivery to the phone. A VoIP VPN can also run within an IP in IP tunnel or using SSL based OpenVPN . There is no encryption in former case, but traffic overhead is significantly lower in comparison with IPsec tunnel. The advantage of OpenVPN tunneling is that it can run on a dynamic IP and may provide up to 512 bits SSL encryption. Unreferenced date October 2008 A Layer 2 MPLS VPN is a term in computer networking . It is a method that Internet service providers use to segregate their network for their customers, to allow them to transmit data over an IP network . This is often sold as a service to businesses. Layer 2 VPNs are a type of Virtual Private Network VPN that uses Multiprotocol Label Switching MPLS labels to transport data. The communication occurs between Router computing routers that are known as Provider Edge routers PEs , as they sit on the edge of the provider s network, next to the customer s network. Internet providers who have an existing Layer 2 network such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode ATM or Frame Relay may choose to use these VPNs instead of the other common MPLS VPN, Network Layer Layer 3 . There is no one IETF standard for Layer 2 MPLS VPNs. Instead, two methodologies may be used. Both methods use MPLS Headers to Encapsulation networking encapsulate data. However, they differ in the way they transport data. Types of Layer 2 MPLS VPNs BGP based The BGP based type is based on a draft specification by Kireeti Kompella , from Juniper Networks . It uses the Border Gateway Protocol BGP as the mechanism for PE routers to communicate with each other about their customer connections. Each router connects to a central cloud, using BGP. This means that when new customers are added usually to new routers , the existing routers will communicate with each other, via BGP, and automatically add the new customers to the service. LDP based The second type is based on a draft specification by Luca Martini from Cisco Systems . This method is also known as a Layer 2 circuit . It uses the Label Distribution Protocol LDP to communicate between PE routers. In this case, every router will connect to every other router in the VPN, which differs from the BGP based methodology. The LDP based L2 VPN also defined the auto discovery mechanism such as BGP DISC , Radius DISC for PE auto discovery. Methods ... more details

Split tunneling is a computer networking concept which allows a VPN user to access a public network e.g., the Internet and a local LAN or Wide area network WAN at the same time, using the same physical network connection. This connection service is usually facilitated through a program such as a VPN client software application. For example, suppose a user utilizes a remote access VPN software client connecting to a corporate network using a hotel wireless network. The user with split tunneling enabled is able to connect to file servers, database servers, mail servers and other servers on the corporate network through the VPN connection. When the user connects to Internet resources Web sites, FTP sites, etc , the connection request goes directly out the gateway provided by the hotel network. Advantages One advantage of using split tunneling is that it alleviates bottlenecks and conserves bandwidth as Internet traffic does not have to pass through the VPN server. Another advantage is in the case where a user works at a supplier or partner site and needs access to network resources on both networks throughout the day. Split tunneling prevents the user from having to continually connect and disconnect. Disadvantages A disadvantage of this method is that it essentially renders the VPN vulnerable to attack as it is accessible through the public, non secure network. Microsoft Point to Point Encryption MPPE is a protocol for encrypting data across Point to Point Protocol PPP and virtual private network VPN links. It uses the RSA RC4 encryption algorithm. MPPE supports 40 bit, 56 bit and 128 bit session keys, which are changed frequently to improve security. The exact frequency that the keys are changed is negotiated, but may be as frequent as every packet. MPPE alone does not compress or expand data, but the protocol is often used in conjunction with Microsoft Point to Point Compression which compresses data across PPP or VPN links. Negotiation of MPPE happens within the Compression Control Protocol CCP , a subprotocol of PPP. This can lead to incorrect belief that it is a compression protocol.
