  1. Voice browser

A voice browser is a web browser that presents an interactive voice user interface to the user. In addition, it typically provides an interface to the PSTN or a Private branch exchange PBX . Just as a visual web browser works with HTML pages, a voice browser operates on pages that specify voice dialogues. Typically these pages are written in VoiceXML , the World Wide Web Consortium W3C s standard voice dialog markup language, but other proprietary voice dialogue languages remain in use. A voice browser presents information aurally, using pre recorded audio file playback or using text to speech software to render textual information as audio. A voice browser obtains information using speech recognition and keypad entry e.g., DTMF detection . As speech recognition and web technologies have matured over the past decade, thousands of voice applications have been deployed commercially and voice browsers are supplanting traditional proprietary interactive voice response IVR systems. Scores of companies provide voice browsers. These take the form of software, packaged hardware software solutions or hosted solutions. 1. VoiceXML

VoiceXML VXML is the World Wide Web Consortium W3C s standard XML format for specifying interactive voice dialogues between a human and a computer. It allows voice applications to be developed and deployed in an analogous way to HTML for visual applications. Just as HTML documents are interpreted by a visual web browser, VoiceXML documents are interpreted by a voice browser . A common architecture is to deploy banks of voice browsers attached to the Public Switched Telephone Network Public Switched Telephone Network PSTN to allow users to interact with voice applications over the telephone. Usage Many commercial VoiceXML applications have been deployed, processing millions of telephone calls per day. These applications include order inquiry, package tracking, driving directions, emergency notification, wake up, flight tracking, voice access to email, customer relationship management, prescription refilling, audio news magazines, voice dialing, real estate information and national directory assistance applications. VoiceXML has tags that instruct the voice browser to provide speech synthesis , automatic speech recognition , dialog management, and audio playback. The following is an example of a VoiceXML document source lang xml vxml version 2.0 xmlns http www.w3.org 2001 vxml form block prompt Hello world prompt block form vxml source When interpreted by a VoiceXML interpreter this will output Hello world with synthesized speech. Typically, HTTP is used as the transport protocol for fetching VoiceXML pages. Some applications may use static VoiceXML pages, while others rely on dynamic VoiceXML page generation using an application server like Jakarta Tomcat Tomcat , Weblogic , Internet Information Services IIS , or WebSphere . Historically, VoiceXML platform vendors have implemented the standard in different ways, and added proprietary features. But the VoiceXML 2.0 standard, adopted as a W3C Recommendation on 16 March 2004, clarified most areas of difference. The VoiceXML ...   more details

  1. Call Control eXtensible Markup Language

Call Control eXtensible Markup Language CCXML is an XML standard designed to provide asynchronous Event computing event based telephony support to VXML VoiceXML . Its current status is a W3C W3C recommendation Proposed Recommendation , adopted May 10, 2011. Whereas VoiceXML is designed to provide a Voice User Interface to a voice browser , CCXML is designed to inform the voice browser how to handle the telephony control of the voice channel. The two XML applications are wholly separate and are not required by each other to be implemented however, they have been designed with interoperability in mind Status and Future CCXML 1.0 has reached the status of a W3C recommendation Proposed Recommendation . The transition from W3C recommendation Candidate Recommendation to W3C recommendation Proposed Recommendation took 1 year, while the transition from W3C recommendation Last Call Working Draft to W3C recommendation Candidate Recommendation took just over 3 years. As CCXML uses extensively the concepts of events and transitions, it is expected that the State diagram state machines used in the next CCXML 2.0 version will take advantage of a new XML State Machine notation called SCXML , however SCXML is still in W3C recommendation Working Draft . Implementations http www.phonologies.com oktopous.php Oktopous ccXML Browser is a first Linux based comprehensive ccXML light weight tool kit, that conforms to the Working Draft spec of CCXML 1.0 published in April 2010. It is an XML based markup language which provides a generic state machine based execution environment based on Harel statechart s. SCXML is able to describe complex Finite state machine state machines . For example, it is possible to describe notations such as sub states, parallel states, synchronization, or concurrency, in SCXML. Goals The objective of this standard is to generify state diagrams notations which are already used in other XML contexts. For example, it is expected that SCXML notations will replace the State diagram State machines notations used in the next CCXML 2.0 version an XML standard designed to provide telephony support to VXML VoiceXML . It could also be used as a multimodal control language in the W3C MMI Multimodal Interaction Activity . One of the goals of this language is to make sure that the language is compatible with CCXML and that there is an easy path for existing CCXML scripts to be converted to SCXML without major changes to the programming model or document structure for example, by using an XSL Transformations XSL Transformation .
