- Variome
The Variome is the whole set of genetic variation s found in populations of species that have gone through a relatively short evolution change. For example, among humans, about 1 in every 1,200 nucleotide base s differ. However, as the human species diverged only 10,000 years ago, this variation rate is comparatively small. In practice, the variome can be the sum of the single nucleotide polymorphisms SNPs of the population. Variomics is the study of variome and a branch of bioinformatics . Projects There are a number of international project studying the human variome, including the International HapMap Project and the Human Variome Project HVP . The HapMap Project aims to identify and catalog genetic similarities and differences among humans. The HVP aims to collect data on all human genetic variation. Image Hvplogo.png right thumb The Human Variome Project FAIR USE of Hvplogo.png see image description page at http en.wikipedia.org wiki Image Hvplogo.png for rationale The Human Variome Project HVP is the global initiative to collect and curate all human genetic variation affecting human health. Its mission is to improve health outcomes by facilitating the unification of data on human genetic variation and its impact on human health. Inception The HVP concept was conceived by Richard Cotton geneticist Professor Richard Cotton , a leader in the field of human genetic variation . His group, the Genomic Disorders Research Centre , based at the University of Melbourne and St Vincent s Hospital, Melbourne St. Vincent s Hospital , has established a consortium that covers genomic variation and its health implications in a comprehensive form. This consortium has encouraged the creation and supported many of the 571 gene specific variation database s currently available on the internet . However, these databases are of varying completeness and individualistic, so the Human Variome Project was born to establish a central project to encourage the collection and sourcing of this data, verifying it and ultimately using it for improved health outcomes. Geneticists, Diagnosticians, Researchers and Bio informatics scientists came together in June 2006 at the Human Variome Project Meeting, organized by Professor Cotton s team, and agreed take on the task of organising data collection and unifying the systems of data access and storage. - Microattribution
Orphan date January 2012 Use dmy dates date December 2011 The term microattribution a form of data citation was first defined as giving database accessions the same citation conventions and indices that journal articles currently enjoy . In the sense that the purpose of precise attribution is to extend the scholarly convention of giving citation credit, the provenance of a piece of scholarship observation or data deposition is recognized to give credit and priority to a preceding author. Microattribution is thus defined as a scholarly contribution smaller than a journal article being ascribed to a particular author or a small scholarly contribution being ascribed to a particular author . ref cite web title On microattribution url http blogs.plos.org mfenner 2011 08 28 on microattribution publisher Gobbledygook accessdate 3 October 2011 ref Of course, since data accessions can describe contributions that can vastly exceed research articles in size and quality, quantum attribution or precise citation might be better terms. Origin The concept was introduced in a February 2007 blog post http blogs.nature.com ng freeassociation 2007 02 duke of url.html 20 Duke of URL by Myles Axton. In the interests of giving credit to the resources geneticists find most useful, here are the numbers of papers citing the most frequently cited links The term was first used in an April 2007 editorial published in Nature Genetics . The Human Variome Project will need to introduce publishing innovations at both ends of the citation spectrum. It will need to track the citation of each variant s accession code in papers, database entries and across the web. This closing of the online publication loop might be termed microattribution. ref cite web title What is the Human Variome Project? url http www.nature.com ng journal v39 n4 full ng0407 423.html publisher Nature Genetics accessdate 26 October 2011 ref Subsequent editorials and blog posts elaborated the idea that the provenance of data access ... more details
