Superficial velocity or superficial flow velocity , in engineering of multiphase flow s and flows in porous media , is an hypothetical artificial fluid velocity calculated as if the given phase matter phase or fluid were the only one flowing or present in a given cross sectional area. Other phases, particles, the skeleton of the porous medium, etc. present in the channel are disregarded. Superficial velocity is used in many engineering equations because it is the value which is usually readily known and unambiguous, whereas real velocity is often variable from place to place, its mean not readily available in complex flow systems, and subject to assumptions. Superficial velocity can be expressed as math u s frac Q A math where u sub s sub superficial velocity of a given phase, m s Q volume flow rate of the phase, m sup 3 sup s A cross sectional area, m sup 2 sup Using the concept of porosity , the dependence between the advection velocity of fluid and the superficial velocity can be expressed as for one dimensional flow math u s phi v math where math phi math is porosity, dimensionless v is the advection velocity, m s. The local physical velocity can still be different than the advection velocity because the vector of the local fluid flow does not have to be parallel to that of average flow. Also, there may be local constriction in the flow channel. See also Volumetric flux Category Velocity Category Engineering pl Pr dko filtracji ... more details

In turbomachinery , a velocity triangle or a velocity diagram is a triangle representing the various components of velocities of the working fluid in a turbomachinery turbomachine . Velocity triangles may be drawn for both the inlet and outlet sections of any turbomachine. The vector mathematics and physics vector nature of velocity is utilized in the triangles, and the most basic form of a velocity triangle consists of the tangential velocity, the absolute velocity and the relative velocity of the fluid making up three sides of the triangle. Unreferenced date December 2009 The thermal velocity or thermal speed is a typical velocity of the thermal motion of particles which make up a gas, liquid, etc. Thus, indirectly, thermal velocity is a measure of temperature. Technically speaking it is a measure of the width of the peak in the Maxwell Boltzmann distribution Distribution of the velocity vector Maxwell Boltzmann particle velocity distribution . Note that in the strictest sense thermal velocity is not a velocity , since velocity usually describes a vector geometric vector rather than simply a scalar physics scalar speed . Since the thermal velocity is only a typical velocity, a number of different definitions can be and are used. Taking math k B math to be the Boltzmann constant , math T math is the temperature, and math m math is the mass of a particle, then we can write the different thermal velocities In one dimension If math v th math is defined as the root mean square of the velocity in any one dimension i.e. any single direction , then math v th sqrt frac k BT m math If math v th math is defined as the mean of the magnitude of the velocity in any one dimension i.e. any single direction , then math v th sqrt frac 2 k BT pi m math If math v th math is defined as the math 1 e math half width of the thermal distribution or if math v th math is defined such that a particle with this speed has an energy of math k B T math , then math v th sqrt frac 2k BT m math . Shear velocity , also called friction velocity , is a form by which a shear stress may be re written in units of velocity . It is useful as a method in fluid mechanics to compare true velocities, such as the velocity of a flow in a stream, to a velocity that relates shear between layers of flow. Shear velocity is used to describe shear related motion in moving fluids. It is used to describe Diffusion and Dispersion water waves dispersion of particles, tracers, and contaminants in fluid flows The velocity profile near the boundary of a flow see Law of the wall Transport of sediment in a channel Shear velocity also helps in thinking about the rate of shear and dispersion in a flow. Shear velocity scales well to rates of dispersion and bedload sediment transport. A general rule is that the shear velocity is about 1 10 of the mean flow velocity. math u star sqrt frac tau rho math Where math tau math is the shear stress in an arbitrary layer of fluid and math rho math is the density of the fluid. Typically, for sediment transport applications, the shear velocity is evaluated at the lower boundary of an open channel math u star sqrt frac tau b rho math Where math tau b math is the shear stress given at the boundary. Shear velocity can also be defined in terms of the local velocity and shear stress fields as opposed to whole channel values, as given above . References Whipple, K. Peculiar motion or peculiar velocity refers to the true velocity of an object, relative to a rest frame. Galactic astronomy In galactic astronomy , the term peculiar motion or peculiar velocity refers to the motion of an object usually a star through space. Local objects are usually related in terms of proper motion and radial velocity , that is the amount an object appears to move across the sphere of the heavens, and the measured speed at which it travels towards or away from us, respectively. Its actual motion is the peculiar motion. Cosmology In physical cosmology , the term peculiar velocity or peculiar motion refers to the components of a receding galaxy s velocity that cannot be explained by Hubble s law . According to Hubble, and as verified by many astronomers, a galaxy is receding from us at a speed proportional to its distance. The relationship between speed and distance would be exact in the absence of other effects. Galaxies are not distributed evenly throughout observable space, but typically found in groups or galaxy cluster clusters , ranging in size from fewer than a dozen to several thousands. All these nearby galaxies have a gravitational effect, to the extent that the original galaxy can have a velocity of over 1,000 km second s in an apparently random direction. This velocity will therefore add, or subtract, from the radial velocity that one would expect from Hubble s law. The main consequence is that, in determining the distance of a single galaxy, a possible error must be assumed. This error becomes smaller, relative to the total speed, as the distance increases. A more accurate estimate can be made by taking the average velocity of a group of galaxies the peculiar velocities, assumed to be essentially random, will cancel each other, leaving a much more accurate measurement. Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Image Velocity selector.svg thumb right 300px A velocity selector A velocity selector is used in accelerator mass spectrometry to select particles based on their speed. The velocity selector is composed of orthogonal electric and magnetic fields, such that particles with the correct charge to mass ratio and speed will be unaffected, and other particles will be deflected. Theory Any charged particle in an electric field will feel a force proportional to the charge and field strength such that math vec F q vec E math , where F is force, q is charge, and E is electric field. Similarly, any particle moving in a magnetic field will feel a force proportional to the velocity and charge of the particle. The force felt by any particle is then equal to math vec F q vec v times vec B math , where F is force, q is the charge on the particle, v is the velocity of the particle, B is the strength of the magnetic field, and math times math is the cross product . In the case of a velocity selector, the magnetic field is always at 90 degrees to the velocity and the force is simplified to math F qvB math in the direction described by the cross product. Setting the two forces to equal magnitude in opposite directions it can be shown that math frac E B v math .
