The village overlooks a long inland stretch of water, Vendelsj n, near which the Vendel river has its confluence with the river Fyris. The church was established in 1310. Vendel is the site of an ancient royal estate, part of Uppsala d , a network of royal estates meant to provide income for the medieval Swedish kings. Vendel cemetery In 1881 1883 a series of excavations by Hjalmar Stolpe revealed 14 graves in and just beyond the south east corner of Vendel churchyard. Several of the burials were contained in boats up to 9 metres long, and were richly furnished with assemblages of weapons including fine swords , helmets, cauldrons and chains, beads, shields, tools, etc. The helmets from Graves 1, 12 and 14 bear close comparison to the helmet from the early 7th century ship burial at Sutton Hoo , Suffolk, England , with die stamped plaques depicting scenes of warriors. The shield from Grave 12 at Vendel is also very comparable to the Sutton Hoo shield, and has a stamped metal strip mount which is actually die linked to an equivalent piece at Sutton Hoo. The Atari Flashback Portable is a handheld Atari 2600 game console created by Curt Vendel and Legacy Engineering Group, creators of the Atari Flashback console units. Early information suggests it will be a small handheld device with 2.5 TFT screen running approximately 15 hours on a set of three AAA batteries. Games are loaded into internal 2MB memory by use of a USB cable. The release date was projected as early 2008 with a retail price of approximately 40, but this date has long passed and no announcements have been made since the initial showcasing of the prototype in 2007. Unreferenced date October 2009 The Germanic Iron Age is the name given to the period 400 800 in Northern Europe and it is part of the continental Age of Migrations . Germanic Iron Age The Germanic Iron Age follows the Roman Iron Age and the beginning is marked by the fall of the Roman empire and the rise of the Germanic king doms in Western Europe. In Scandinavia , it is followed by the Viking Age . It is divided into the early Germanic Iron Age EGIA and the late Germanic Iron Age LGIA . In Sweden , the LGIA 550 800 is usually referred to as the Vendel era , in Norway, the Merovinger Merovingian Age. During the fall of the Roman empire, an abundance of gold flowed into Scandinavia and there are excellent works in gold from this period. Gold was used to make scabbard mountings and bracteate s. After the Roman empire had disappeared, gold became scarce and Scandinavians began to make objects of gilded bronze, with decorations of animal style interlacing animals in Scandinavian style. The EGIA decorations show animals that are rather faithful anatomically, but in the LGIA they evolve into intricate shapes with interlace visual arts interlacing and interwoven limbs that are well known from the Viking Age . The farm s notability derives from the presence of a burial site from the Swedish Vendel Age part of the Iron age c. 550 793 and the Viking Age it was used for more than 300 years. The first ship burial is from the 6th century and the last grave field graves are from the 11th century. Excavation Image valsgarde svardfaste.jpg thumb Hilt with cloisonn decoration from Valsg rde. The site was found and excavated by archaeologists in the 1920s, and before this similar graves had only been found at Vendel , which gave its name to this period of the Scandinavian Iron Age. The graves are princely, and are almost identical to ones found later in England , at Sutton Hoo in East Anglia . There are several theories about the identities of those buried, ranging from the Yngling s Scylfings to powerful warriors within the Leidang system, or local strongmen who had enriched themselves through trade due to the area s strategic position between the fjord of M laren and the important region of Tiundaland . File KHM Wien A 41 Moravian nasal helmet, 11th century.jpg thumb upright This 11th century Moravian nasal helmet displayed in Vienna is one of the few remaining such helmets. Image Harold dead bayeux tapestry.png thumb Image of Harold Godwinson from the Bayeux Tapestry . Harold and his huscarl s are depicted in nasal helms. The nasal helmet is a type of combat helmet used from the Early Middle Ages until the High Middle Ages . The nasal helmet was a form of helmet with a domed or raised center, usually formed around a basic skull cap design, with a single protruding strip that extended down over the nose to provide additional facial protection. The helmet appeared throughout Europe late in the 9th century, and became the predominant form of head protection, replacing the previous pudding bowl design, and the Vendel style spectical helm. One of the earliest versions of the nasal helm is the Vasgaard Helmet . The Bayeux Tapestry features many such helmets, it being the most popular form of protection at the time. The helmet began to lose popularity at the end of the 12th century to helmets that provided more facial protection, and although the nasal helm lost popularity amongst the higher classes of knights and men at arms, they were still seen amongst archers to whom a wide field of vision was crucial. The helmet can also be viewed throughout the Maciejowski Bible as a minority item for cavalrymen, giving the impression that it had become uncommon though not unknown by the mid thirteenth century. Nasal helmets have been found of both one piece and Spangenhelm construction, with the later period helmets being made of a single, smooth raised dome to allow weapons to glance off with ease.
