File Valsgarde svardfaste.jpg thumb Hilt of a Vendel period sword found at Valsg rde . A Migration period sword was a type of sword popular during the migration period 4th to 7th centuries AD . This sword type shows a transition from the Roman era Spatha to the Viking sword type of the Early Middle Ages , which eventually gave rise to the arming sword . The blade is normally smooth or shows a very shallow fuller, and often has multiple bands of pattern welding within the central portion. The handles were often of perishable material and there are few surviving examples. Surviving examples of these Germanic Iron Age Vendel period swords had blades measuring between 28 and 32 710 and 810  mm in length and 1.7 to 2.4 45 to 60  mm in width. These single handed weapons of war sported a tang only some 4 to 5 100 to 130  mm long, and had very little taper in their blades ending in usually rounded tip. Names and terminology There is no single term that can be reconstructed as having referred specifically to the spatha in Common Germanic . There are a number of terms and epithets which refer to the sword, especially in Germanic poetry . ref A monographic treatment of the question can be found in May Lansfield Keller, The Anglo Saxon weapon names treated arch ologically and etymologically 1906 . File Canaanite Scarab with Cartouche of King Sheshi Walters 4217 Bottom 2 .jpg thumb Scarab with cartouche of pharaoh Sheshi. Maaibre Sheshi was a pharaoh of Egypt during Egypt s fragmented Second Intermediate Period . Sheshi is difficult to precisely place chronologically. While he is usually described as the founder of the Fifteenth dynasty of Egypt 15th dynasty , this suggestion does not appear tenable since the early Hyksos kings such as Sakir Har and Khyan are known to have adopted the title heka khawaset . Khyan only used a prenomen in the second half of his reign a practice which was followed by his successor Apepi I Apophis . In contrast, Sheshi always used a prenomen according to his seals. The Danish Egyptologist Kim Ryholt has suggested that Sheshi was actually a Fourteenth dynasty of Egypt 14th Dynasty Asiatic king such is the degree of confusion over his timeline during the Second Intermediate Period. The section of the Turin King List dealing with this complex period of Egyptian history is badly damaged and Sheshi s origins and timeline within the Second Intermediate period is uncertain. This article discusses the medieval flag. For the booklet, see The Raven Banner . File RavenBanner.svg thumb A modern reconstruction of the raven banner based on surviving contemporary representations. The raven banner Old Norse hrafnsmerki Middle English hravenlandeye was a flag , possibly totem ic in nature, flown by various Viking chieftains and other Scandinavia n rulers during the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries A.D. The flag, as depicted in Norse art work, was roughly triangular, with a rounded outside edge on which there hung a series of tabs or tassels. It bore a resemblance to ornately carved weather vanes used aboard Viking longship s. Scholars conjecture that the Common Raven raven flag was a symbol of Odin , who was often depicted accompanied by two ravens named Huginn and Muninn . Its intent may have been to strike fear in one s enemies by invoking the power of Odin. As one scholar notes regarding encounters between the Anglo Saxons who had Christianization Christianized from their indigenous Germanic paganism and the invading Scandinavians who retained their native form of Germanic paganism blockquote The Anglo Saxons probably thought that the banners were imbued with the evil powers of pagan idols, since the Anglo Saxons were aware of the significance of inn and his ravens in Norse mythology. ref Hrafnhildur Bodvarsdottir 112. ref blockquote Raven symbolism in indigenous Scandinavian culture File Vendel era helmet 950 .jpg thumb 180px Vendel era helmet with raven noseguard, at the Swedish Museum of National Antiquities .
